Funerals and kids...

What do kids wear to funerals? My girls do not have much dressy clothes, so I will have to pick something up, but am hoping for as simple as possible. Also, we are not planning on bringing the girls to the visitation, especially Ella, but if my parents are busy and cannot watch them, how do you explain the body? She is going to be full of questions and I don't know how to answer them. Thanks for your input!

Re: Funerals and kids...

  • I don't know what you say about the body, if it's an open casket.

Amanda had Caydance wear a nice sweater/shirt with a little skirt. She was adorable. And her daddy would have been proud of her.

  • My niece just wore a dress that she already had for James.  Can you keep her in the back and avoid the body or will she want to go see?  My sil told my niece that the body is just the skin and the person, the heart/soul, was already in heaven.  It seemed to work for her.

I was thinking of something like this too.

That once your heart/soul go to heaven, the rest of you stays here?

I wouldn't worry about what they're wearing. When DH's grandmother passed away, the kids were just wearing shorts & polo shirts (it was August). Nicholas was only 9mos so he just wore pants & a onesie.

No tips on explanations. At DH's grandmother's funeral, the little kids sat in the back of the room watching a DVD and I'm not sure half of them noticed there was a body in the back of the room. Certainly helped keep them distracted from feeling the mood in the place, though.

Completely off subject but I just realized this weekend when the posted Amanda and Caydence's names and pictures on KCCI that Caydence was in Ava's gymnastics class and wasn't there last week.. now I realize why. It broke my heart all over again because both Amanda and Caydence were always so smiley and happy in class and now the heartbreak they are living through..

Not to sound like a total B, but when you see them again, will you just treat her, meaning Amanda, as if you would have before you knew about her husband's death? She's having issues with people coming up to her and giving their condolances. She is greatful for all the support, it's just becoming very overwhelming. At the funeral yesterday, there were people she didn't even know hugging her, talking to her, it was just very difficult for her. But on a good note she is doing fairly well.

And Caydance knows that if she wants to talk to daddy, she just has to go like this
