I need a break - ideas please.

Alright, as you all have heard me whine time and time again, we are redoing our house. "My" project right now is SD's bedroom.  We just installed beadboard which looks pretty fantastic. I am just not sure how to paint the room.

Thoughts:

*soft lime-ish green beadboard (but white trim) and light purple walls

*leave the beadboard and trim white and paint the walls purple or pink or light lime green

*or...any suggestions?

She has a comforter that is white, pink, green, and purple with a hot pink dust ruffle.  She also has a pink canopy and a pink toy chest...

Re: I need a break - ideas please.

  • *leave the beadboard and trim white and paint the walls purple or pink or light lime green

  • I vote for leaving the beadboard and trim white, and painting the walls either light purple or green. I really love purple/pink or green/pink combinations, and there already seems to be a lot of pink in the room, so I think the walls could use a color other than pink.
  • I *just* painted my SD's bedroom purple last Friday. It was a surprise for her, she was camping with DH and I ended up staying up until 4am to finish. I was exhausted, but it was worth it. :)

I used Behr premium paint in 'plum shadow.' It's a medium grayish purple. Turned out really well! I found some really cute letters and a little orange butterfly here: http://www.butterflycraze.com/alphabet.php that I also used.

    Happy decorating!

  • Why do more work than necessary. I would leave the headbands white and then paint the walls light lime green. I agree with the bedroom maybe looking like it was covered in Pepto Bismol (this is coming from a lover of pink). I really lime green and pink together.

I LOVE this idea - I am going to look for this color tonight. I think a medium grayish purple would 'go' better in our house AND it would be a color that she might still like five years from now.  We are surprising her too and I am very excited.  She probably won't notice or care.

There are four HUGE ugly closet doors in the room - we absolutely cannot afford to replace them right now (and I am not sure I care to given all the other stuff that needs to be done), I am going to prime the hell out of them and paint them the same colors as the wall. HD had some cute, cute sticky wall decor things that I might look into as well.

I can't wait until this weekend so I can get started!

I am not generally a fan of pastels, and having no biological children, I haven't been forced to get used to them. : ) 'Plum shadow' is really pretty (to grown-ups as well as kids!), and you're absolutely right, I think it'll age with her much better than a pastel would.

My SD is 6, and I don't think she really knew how to react to her room. She was all smiles and said "it's beauuutiful," and then it was on to the next thing. I think I expected more of a reaction, but I know she likes and appreciates it. I did hear her tell BM about how cool her room was, and that I "stayed up until FOUR O'CLOCK" which was sweet. : ) I would say, just try not to get your hopes up for a big reaction, then if she freaks out, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Target also has some cute wall stickers. SD got some for Christmas and we've been waiting to paint before she uses them. They're that Circo brand, and the ones we got are owls and trees.

For the closet doors, my SD has those too, but luckily they're just painted white, so I didn't touch them. DH and I have the closet door problem in our bedroom, and I've been thinking about taking the doors off, finding some cute fabric, putting up a curtain rod, and making cute curtains in place of the doors. I think you could do this pretty inexpensively, and it might be fun. I'm not much of a seamstress, so I haven't tackled it yet. :)

  • Wow, I really like the idea of taking the doors off and using curtains instead...hmmm....

I definitely do not expect her to be all goo goo gaga about it. Or worse she will say something like "ummmm I like my room at mama's better" (she says that to me all the time).  As long as *I* like it, it doesn't really matter, I guess.

  • I think, even if she makes a comment about her mom's house being better (my SD does that sometimes too), it will mean something to her that you care enough to give her a nicer room.

    Keep me updated!

  • I love the idea of the gray/purple color and using curtains instead of the closet door! That sounds super cute!

I do love picking out fabric....and that is a detail she might really enjoy...

Have you all been to pinkitzel? They have really cute curtains - I bet I could do something like that for the closet since the window in that room is somewhat small and not worth adding draperies to..huh.

My husband will hate all of you, just FYI!

And you are right Amy - I tend to make things much more difficult than they should be.  After all that we have been through, its so important to me to put a lot of thought into it so that it is perfect.

This is my vote, as well!
