Who's been? If so, did you like it?
H and I are thinking about taking a weekend trip there in a couple of months. Neither of us are huge gamblers or partiers (Is that a word?) but I think it's just one of those places we need to see. I think we'd have a lot of fun, but something is holding me back from booking it.
Re: Vegas.
ok so....my sister lives in Vegas and my mom used to so i've been about 30 times. seriously. i've done trips staying on the strip and not.
if you're not partiers and you dont gamble...i'm honestly not sure what you're going to do. the constant noise/smoke/lights from the casinos are just that...constant. it's not necessarily a relaxing trip. now, if you plan to go to just hang by the pool...i'm sure that's nice. i've only been to the pool at the Flamingo (actually not bad for an older hotel!).
the food is super exspensive on the strip. it's good...but VERY pricey. it's crowded all the time. there is a lot of shopping and the weather is great, but i'm not sure you'd have a super awesome time if youre not partiers or gamblers.
I went once, but it was to watch my friend's old boyfriend (he is a UFC fighter). My time was spent drooling over this one fighter from Brazil.
I did like it in Vegas though. I only gambled $20 and that took 5 seconds. I loved the NY roller coaster and this giant arcade place. They have air hockey that spits out like 6 pucks at a time!
We didn't go to any shows since we went last minute, but I'd definiltely love to see O from Cirque de Soleil. We were shocked that the seats were so pricey - even ones partially blocked by a pole were like $50 if I remember correctly.
I really liked just walking around, shopping at Cesars, going in the Space Needle and seeing the Bellagio water thing too. It was fun - I'd definitely go back, but I'd stay longer and do maybe a night or two on the strip and a night or two elsewhere to go ATVing and stuff.
don't get me wrong, i do LIKE vegas...it's just expensive. there is a lot to do, but it's pricey. i've never been to a show (which i hear are amazing) because of the cost. there's an aquarium at Mandalay Bay but it's so expensive (i think like $50) that i've never gone. the Bellagio is gorgeous to just walk around in. the shopping can take up a lot of time.
i just hesitate to tell you it's good idea since it sounds like there are a lot of other destinations that might fit better. but, if you do decide to go, let me know and i can give you some recommendations!
THIS!!! bill & I aren't gambelers (sp?) or night club people either, or big show people to that matter....but we had a blast. But you're right, after a few nights i grew crazy of the "ding ding ding ding ding ding ding", etc, & brite lites - good thing there is no smoking in most casinos anymore, but there is still that lingering smell sometimes. all in all, if your not gamblers or a "showy" couple, but love people watching and site seeing, it's a really fun time... just don't make too long of a trip of it. we just bopped around and did all the free stuff....that took up our whole week!!!

i'm not sure this is true. there are a few non-smoking (maybe Mandarin? i can't remember) but for the most part, all of the casinos i've been to are smoking.
If we go, we'd only be there for like 3 nights. Don't get me wrong.... we might gamble some, but I'm not one to go drop a ton of money in the slot machines. I think we'd have fun people watching and walking around.
Is the Hoover Dam close enough to drive to on such a short trip?
yeah, it's not too far. i can't remember exactly...but it's do able in that amount of time. it's one of those things that you go and see once and you're like...ok. cool. done that.
i'm not a huge gambler. when i went after i graduated college and i was partying more...i definitely gambled more when i was drinking
it's a fun town for sure...i would say 3 nights is def enough time. you'll have fun....just make sure to plan to spend money if you intend to eat on the strip.
We LOVE Vegas. We're not big gamblers by any means and are usually too cheap to watch any of the big headliners or major shows. However, we love to spend money on food and alcohol. Heh. I think walking around all of the casinos is fun, especially if you've never been before. There are some comedy shows and random acts that are worth watching out there. When we went for DH's 30th last year, we probably spent $100 each on gambling for the entire 4 day weekend. We did go there for some partying with a group of friends though.
With that said, when DH and I first went to Vegas just the two of us. We also had a blast and we didn't go to the clubs or anything like that. I think for a long weekend you will have a great time. Rent a car just for the day to take you out to Hoover Dam. It's worth it!
Oh, and side note - the only thing I hated about Vegas was down in the older part of the strip near the space needle where those nasty guys flick those escort service cards at you.
They're so annoying with their little card tapping, flicking noise. I don't know why, but they really ticked me off!
Also FWIW - we stayed in the Excalibur when we went. It was dirt chip and kind of haunted mansion like inside, but we didn't mind it at all. I felt like I was in a Mario Brothers game down in the cave with that "Da na, da dun" music playing in the background.
omg Excalibur totally freaks me out! i dont know why though. i cna't go in there!
and yeah, the escort/hooker cards are ANNOYING. they used to do it on the entire strip...i wonder if it's moved down more towards downtown now? i saw them hand one to a kid one time and i REEMED the guy out. i mean, seriously!?
When we went maybe 3/4 years ago it was contained to just the area near the space needle/circus circus end of the strip. Just one one side I think so hopefully they move farther and farther away.
I'm from NOLA - I have no problem with strippers, random street people, etc. I DO have a problem with them loudly snapping the cards in my face though. I have tons of patience and I even almost punched one of those guys in the face!
Thanks for the info ladies!
Choco.... I hear you on being cheap except when it comes to food and drinks.
Those are definitely worth the splurging.
Kare... I laughed at the Mario comment. lol.... I'll remember to stay away from there.
