**Mrs. Mitch**

Sorry to hear about Baxter's itchiness.

I just wanted to ask if you are sure he does not have fleas?  Fleas are already a big issue in SE MI and the most common place for them to itch is on the back end (think lower back between the hips).  I would check to make sure he doesn't have them.

But, you can actually give up to 2mg/lb of Benadryl.  It will also not necessarily make him drowsy.  It can actually have the reverse effect and make him super hyper.  It also causes my dog to vomit.  There are other allergy meds you can give if the Benadryl doesn't work for him (and he for sure doesn't have fleas).

HTH!

  • Oh, and you also don't have to give Children's Benadryl.  Just use regular, plain old Diphenhydramine.  It usually comes in 25mg tabs.  :)

  • Thank you for the advice!  I'll definitely check him for fleas.  What defense do you use?  We use FrontLine.  Is there something better out there?

We are going to try and give him Benadryl tonight.  See how it goes. I hope he's not hyper, could be a long night!

  • Frontline is a great product.  You are probably using Frontline Plus which is even better.  The other one out there is Frontline Top Spot which isn't very good and not really recommended.

If you are already using Frontline Plus, I highly doubt he has fleas.  Just wanted to be sure!

  • I have Frontline Plus, but I haven't applied it yet. I definitely will still check for fleas. I gave him Benadryl last night an he still was chewing some, but he slept like a champ Big Smile
