I noticed yesterday when I was paying bills that I had an unusual ATM transaction. Unusual in that it was $400 more than the highest amount I normally take out, and unusual in that it happened in Wisconsin, and unusual in that my card was still in my hand (in the Chicago burbs). I called my bank, complained, they said to wait until today. Today- there was a second fraudulent transaction, this time for $503. I called, they were able to file the dispute today b/c the first transaction actually went through. And today they cancelled the card (yesterday they said to wait).
Anyway- my husband just forwarded me this:
So my $10 purchase of yarn or a frame ended up causing lots of problems months later!! And if this was last year... it would have wiped out my bank account!!
I know there are a few other Chicago ladies on here- so I thought I would spread the word!
Re: stupid debit cards!
Wow, that's awful! People who steal really irritate me. It's so much hassle and it really takes away your security. I never use my debit card for anything except taking out cash for this reason. Credit card companies are good about catching charges that differ from your norm. Someone tried to use my card number to purchase over $1000 at a CVS in NJ recently, and Chase took care of the problem before I even knew about it.

Everyone welcome.
Bank of America is pretty good about this kind of stuff. Right before the wedding I got a setllement check in the mail and was able to go and buy a new camera, a new phone and other small stuff we needed before leaving on the honeymoon. By the time I got to Target to buy my camera my card was declined... when I called the bank they said that there was so much unusual activity that they froze it until i told them it was me making these purchases.
Glad to hear that they're working things out for you, but it definitely sucks that people are so stupid that they need to steal.

Even though I cancelled my card earlier, I ended up stopping at a branch on the way home from work and I was the fourth person at that branch alone with this problem today, They are closing my account as soon as my "real" transactions go through. The guy was really nice and is going to take care of everything for me tomorrow, and call me once everything is taken care of. The charge from yesterday was already posted back into my account, and the charge from today should be posted by tomorrow.
I called the Michael's I shopped at, and they were less than helpful and even sounded annoyed!!
I feel bad for all the people who this is happening to who are living paycheck to paycheck. If this happened when I was in grad school... it would have wiped me out and caused all sorts of bounced checks, etc!!
Wow, I am glad you have been able to take care of this! I never use a debit card anymore because of this. DH had a similar problem about 2 years ago and we both started using credit cards for purchases because the credit card companies seem easier to deal with than banks.
Glad everything is getting straightened out!
