AW: I get to keep my job!
Our union voted to approve 4 furlough days for next year, which means my pink slip will be rescinded! As much as it sucks to have furlough days again, I'll take them over unemployment any day!
Re: AW: I get to keep my job!
Oh yeah...unfortunately, it got pretty ugly.

Ditto. My union at work just had one of those votes a few months ago and it was not pleasant... But ultimately, people decided it was preferable to suffer collectively with furloughs than see a few of us laid off. So congrats on keeping your job!
Yes, I've had tenure for the last 3 years. That doesn't matter when it comes to lay-offs though. My group (everyone with the same hire date) is now the bottom group on the seniority list. There's no one left under us because they've laid everyone else off and haven't hired anyone new in the last couple years. So...when it comes time to talk bigger classes and reducing programs, etc., we are the first group to go. :-(

Yes, it is more common for us because we have lower class sizes than in high schools. So when they raise the class sizes, it downsizes the teaching force. It rarely happens with high school teachers because they already have 35+ kids in their classes! That's why they call them RIF notices...reduction in force. It has absolutely nothing to do wtih tenure or performance or anything like that. It's strictly based on numbers and how many teachers they need.
