Visiting for summer, where to stay?
Hi Austin Nesties,
I have a summer visiting fellowship this summer at UT Austin. I think I'll be renting a car (I'll need one, right?).
Where should I look for a sublet? It'd be great to be walking distance to restaurants and cafes. Also, not too far from UT Austin (not sure how big Austin is).
Also, I have the choice of June or July. Any recs? Anything neat going on in either month or is weather substantially better in one month?
Anything else I should be thinking about?
Thanks in advance!
Re: Visiting for summer, where to stay?
I don't know campus very well, but if you can sublet right down town you'd be fine with a bike if you don't have a car. However, if you ever want to go anywhere else besides downtown, you'll want a car. Austin is fairly big, with no traffic it takes about 30 minutes to get from South Austin to North Austin, plus there are a ton of things outside of Austin to see!
Um, I'd say June if you don't like 100+ weather. July isn't bad, but June is better. It's been super dry this year though...
I know the other girls have tons of recs, but seeing you're from San Francisco I'm sure you'll LOVE Austin. I've noticed a lot of the people in both cities have a very care free, do what you feel as long as you're happy vibe. I love this city
if you want to be within walking distance to campus, i recommend looking at anything just north of campus. a lot of grad students live just north, so it's a little quieter than west campus where the frat/sorority houses are. you may also have an easier time subletting from another student who is going away for the summer rather than look in a part of town where regular austin residents live.
june may just be cracking into consecutive 100 degree days, but july for sure is a killer. i can't really think of any real special events that happen in the summer. i tend to just hide indoors or go swimming.
you'll want a car. simple things like groceries aren't really convenient without one.
You might like living in the Hyde Park neighborhood, which is just a few miles from campus, but still has a lot of grad students/regular students. It's an area with lots of walkable restaruants/shopping.
You will definitely want a car in Austin, though. I think the last time I didn't use my car every day was when I lived on West Campus and walked to class at UT. Even then, I'd regularly drive to other parts of Austin. West Campus is definitely all students, and where all of the fraternity and sorority houses are located, but it might be a good option for a sublet for a month.
Maybe an apartment locator could help you find a place? Or, sublets might be advertised on craigslist.

Yes, I would try to live just north of campus, like the Hyde Park or Harris Park areas. There are lots of garage apts there... maybe they will have a one month sublet?
UT has a number of shuttle buses that go around campus and into other parts of the city. It's a great way to get around if you don't have a car. They are MUCH better than the city buses because they don't stop as frequently and usually don't smell like puke.

Great, thanks, nesties! I've been searching on craigslist, but now I know what neighborhoods I'll be looking for. I'll try north of campus and downtown (same as midtown and central Austin?).
UT also said they may have housing on campus for me. Would that be terrible or pretty OK?
