Where should we go this summer?

We're going to take a vacation before the baby is here...a babymoon, if you will:)

We can't really decide where we want to go. I know Josh would love to go to Ireland, but I think the long plane ride would be uncomfortable for me and I'm not sure it would be such a relaxing trip with all the things we'd want to see.

We've been to St. Lucia....that's about it as far as tropical locations. It doesn't have to be a tropical destination, but we do love the beach.

Any suggestions???

Re: Where should we go this summer?

  • Is the west coast still too long a plane ride for you? May be the same as to Ireland.

How about San Diego? Or, and this would not be as fun for you, California wine country? Rent a convertible and drive down the coast from SF to Santa Barbara?

  • How about something within 2 hours (plane ride) Savannah, GA or Maine? I also love Newport!!! There's always FL! But the sun might be a little much for you at that time.

I don't think it would be quite as long of a plane ride. We thought about CA wine country too....we'd love that, except it would totally suck that I couldn't fully enjoy it! I think that's a trip we'd rather do when I can actually drink again:)

Hmmm not bad ideas! I also thought about Tybee Island, GA. I saw something about it on tv and it looks super cute. But I wonder if I'll even want to be in a hot location in a month or two...it's hard to tell!

My doctor put the scare into me by telling me to stay out of the sun and to not get overheated because it could really hurt the baby! I'm so paranoid now, lol! Plus, I don't think at 6 months PG that I would want to do a long plane ride. I think I'd rather stay closer to home, KWIM?

I definitely think Newport, Savannah, Charleston and San Francisco are good spots. Have you been to Newport yet Rach?

    Oh wow, really? Hmmmm.

Yeah I agree with you on the long plane ride. I can't imagine that being very comfortable when my belly gets bigger.

  • Here's some ideas we were considering for ourselves:

    Outer Banks?

Cruise - Alaska, Caribbean, Bahamas? Although I don't know how being on a ship and pregnant would feel.

    Florida Keys?

LOL it sounds awesome! I'll have to do some more research and mention it to Josh:)

  • If you go to Newport (which I also recommend), go to the Moorings for dinner. Soooooo good. The scallop chowder is amazing. (I'm partial to the place. We got engaged there.)

Rach- check the honeymoon post- i dont think we are friends on FB but i posted the link to my album from our honeymoon. We went to Savannah and Tybee. It probably depends on which month you go how hot it is down there. But you know. I'm biased- it's now my favorite place in the entire world.

And Rach, you can convince Josh by telling him that there are two decent Irish pubs right in downtown Newport near the harbor: Buskers and Celtica. I'm sure they have Jameson!

We've stayed at the Marriott and the Newport Harbor Hotel, both right on the water. Of those two, the Marriott is nicer, just more modern and cleaner. If you book there, make sure to get a harbor view room tho (they have interior rooms with the windows facing the hallway...I can't imagine staying in a room like that...we'd walk down the hall and see people changing cause they didn't close the curtain!)

I've wanted to stay at the Hotel Viking, which looks amazing.

Thanks! I saw all of those listed when I googled Newport vacations. The Hotel Viking does look amazing!!!

  • I've never been to Newport, so I can't comment on that.

We've already started thinking babymoons (because we aren't really going anywhere exciting this summer, just saving up). Our top 3 contendors are:

St. Lucia (or a similar tropical island with an AI, not Jamaica or Mexico)- although I'm a little unsure if I want to go AI, if I can't drink

Vegas- I think this would be a fun, sexy trip. Something to do before kids come into the picture.

San Fran/ Monterey/ Carmel- Dying to drive down 101

I've been to Savannah and Charleston and like Charleston better. Either of those would be great babymoon trips, though. Although, they'll both be really, really hot and humid in July and August. Miami and the Keys would be another great idea. You can stay a few days in Miami then rent a car to drive to Key West (we've been to Key Largo too, but Key West is much better). The drive there takes about 3 hours, but it is beautiful and you get a little taste of all of the other keys on the way. I have lots of travel recommendations for either of any of those trips, if you need them.
