HR Folks - A Resume Question

Hello!

I was asked to look over some resumes of recent college grads as a favor to a collegue. One girl has that she was elected as Homecoming Queen of her college listed. Is this appropriate to list on a resume? My first thought was to tell her to remove it, but I wanted some other opinions first. I really couldn't find too much on the internet.

Thanks!

Ask her how it is relevant to the jobs she's applying for - if she has a valid reason I'd like to hear what it is. If there no reason to have it on there, then remove it. Honestly, I would tell her to remove it. Stuff like that doesn't belong on a resume.

  • I'm not in HR but I'd tell her to remove it. I remember in high school when we did resumes for college they said to put extra curricular activites on there so maybe thats why she did it.
  • I am in HR and I actually think it is ok for a recent grad.  At my college (which was very large), being up for Homecoming Queen was a really big deal, as it required a good GPA, lots of extracurriculars, people to vote for you, etc.

  • I work in HR and I'd tell her to remove it unless the experience was directly related to the position she was going for. To me, it's one of those things that won't really help her, but could hurt her - so why take the chance?

This is what I was thinking. I told her that it is a great accomplishment, but I would remove it because it isn't relevant.

Thank you all for your insight!

  • Definitely remove it. I can't think of a job where such a thing would be relevant, and where seeing such a thing on a resume would sway me in her favor.
