Embassy tour questions

Can't remember who, but I know someone else mentioned they were going in the weekend plans post...

It says that photography is prohibited at some locations. Can I still bring my camera in to those that prohibit photography? I know this probably sounds paranoid, but I just don't want my new camera taken off of me!

Also, how much time would you allot on average at each embassy? I figured we'd do maybe 3 or 4... we don't plan on getting there right at 10, but sometime around noon or before. Are the wait times normally long? I understand it varies from embassy to embassy. The only definite one we're visiting as of now is Spain.

TIA for the help!

Re: Embassy tour questions

  • I went last year and mentioned that I was going this year.

I have no idea about cameras, but I don't really remember security being super strict anywhere last year. I would imagine it would be ok to bring your camera.

It really varies how much time you spend at each embassy (probably anywhere from 10 minutes to way longer if there's alot going on and/or you want to relax), at least it did for us. However, we were able to fit in quite a few of them in one day. We'll probably go to some of the ones we missed last year first so we definitely hit them, and then figure it out from there. But I would think you should have no problem doing 3-4 or more.

Not sure that I was that helpful, sorry!

  • We went both years we were in DC. None of the Embassies we went to that did not allow photography actually took our camera away. They just asked that we not take pictures.

If you get there around noon, you should be able to do 3-4 embassies. Generally, the bigger the country, the longer the wait. The first year, we waited a long time for Ireland, and last year we waited a long time for Finland. Our rule of thumb was generally that we'd only wait in a long line for one embassy. Honestly, some of the smaller ones are the most interesting. Some places you will only stay 10-15 minutes, some you might stay longer. The Danish embassy, which I really wanted to see, gave out timed entry passes last year and by the time we got up there, they only had them for the last tour of the day, so we had to skip it (unfortunately, there weren't any other open embassies on that street so there wasn't really anything to see while we waited. That's the only one I've ever seen do it that way.

It's a really fun way to spend the day - even just walking up and down Embassy row looking at all the mansions, even if they are not open, is neat.
