Greek Yogurt

So I've been aware of the Greek yogurt craze but haven't been able to bring myself to spend $1+ on a cup of yogurt.  Was at Sam's last night and noticed they had a 12 pack of Chobani for just over $10.  I decided to try it out.  Oh my goodness!  So good!  I had one when I got home and it took all my will to not have another before bed last night.  Mmmm.

Re: Greek Yogurt

  • I LOOOOOVE Chobani. They gave me a bunch of free coupons to try out their stuff, so so far I've not had to pay for one. But now I'm hooked so apparently I'll be shelling out the moola!

  • Wow - that is a great deal!  I get my Chobani at Target where it is usually around $1.29 a cup. Not cheap, but a bit better than I've found elsewhere.  Of course, for some odd reason, they have had a supply problem and sometimes there are only a few flavors available - if any.

My favorites are black cherry and peach. mmmmmmmm. I have a pineapple waiting for me at home but I'm not sure how that will go. Pineapple and dairy seems like an odd combo. We'll see. So far I've really liked most of the flavors and I have one EVERY day for lunch - - and for a non-dairy eater like me, that is saying something!

My only complaint(s) with it - and I don't know if it is all Greek yogurt or just Chobani - but after eating it, my mouth feels REALLY dry. That and my tummy sometimes is a bit off/rumbly a few hours after I eat it - but like I said, I'm not a dairy person so that could be contributing to it and it is nothing so bad that would stop me from having it daily.

  • Loooooooove Greek Yogurt so much!! My favorite is Fage. Costco sells the big tubs for really cheap! I portion it out at home and flavor it up with various fruits, honey, lemon curd, almond or vanilla extract, cinammon, cocoa powder, etc. Today I'm having lemon pomegranate with blueberry granola. So good!
  • I'm a big fan of Greek Yogurt as well.  I often have it for breakfast and find that it keeps me much more satisfied than regular yogurt, so I don't snack as much in the morning.  That's worth the extra cost for me.  I'm a strawberry fan.  :)
  • It's funny that Greek yogurt is such a craze these days. When I was a kid, all we had growing up was homemade Greek yogurt (although my family is Lebanese so it went by the Arabic name).

It's really easy to make yourself if you want to save some money.  Heat half a gallon of milk (whole will give you the creamiest results) to just under boiling - about 185 degrees - then take off the heat and let it cool to about 110 degrees.  Once it's at 110 degrees, add 1/2 c. plain yogurt and whisk.  Wrap the pot up in a towel or blanket and let it sit overnight in a warm, draft free place (the microwave is good).  If it's not as thick as you want the next day, strain it through cheese cloth.

And if you want to take it one step further, you can mix in a little salt, wrap the yogurt in cheese cloth and put it in a strainer for 2 or 3 days in the fridge.  You'll end up with a delicious soft cheese (which is very tasty drizzled in olive oil and sprinkled with za'atar spice and eaten with greek olives and flat bread or pita).  My grandma usually lets it sit a few days and it gets to the consistency of soft goat cheese.

um, I TOTALLY WANT TO TRY THIS!!!!!!!!! my mouth is watering.

  • I am addicted to Fage.  Plain, 2% Fage.  I eat it as breakfast with a spoonful of low surgar orange marmalade and a palmful of dried cranberries or fresh blueberries and a tablespoon of honey or 1/2 a banana and palmful of sliced almonds or homemade granola.  The Target by me has started having sales for $1 a carton and I buy them out every time.  I eat it as a snack in the afternoon with a tablespoon of dried greeg seasoning and a couple of crackers or with some salsa mixed in and a handful of chips or 1/8 cup mini chocolate chips.

I use Fage in place of anything that calls for sour cream.  It has much the same consistency and no one can tell that it's not sour cream.  I use it in baking, dips, for tacos and no one is the wiser!

I keep meaning t make my own yogurt, but I've been busy and haven't started it yet.

  • I love, love, love Chobani.  It goes on sale for 5/$5 sometimes at Target.  It is less tart than some of the other Greek yogurts, so it is one that people either love or hate.  I like Fage too, but Chobani is my favorite.

They are pretty receptive to twitter requests and general tweets if you mention how much you like them.

As a blogger, I got a free case and coupons. It's their way of marketing and it seems to be working!

I have been a huge fan of Greek yogurt for years now. I eat Fage 0% and Chobani mostly. I get both at Costco but will buy Cho when it's on sale. I bought a few that aren't in the 12 pack at Costco at Byerly's this week for $1 a piece.

I havent' ventured into making my own yet, but want to try it someday!

I will say that I tried the yoplait and dannon versions of Greek and about vomited. they were terrible! maybe they've gotten better but for a tiny bit more money I can have the good stuff. I wrote a Greek yogurt review about a year ago on my blog...it's under the articles tab LIS.

  • I love chobani too, but had no idea there was a craze.  I tried it one night when I was babysitting and started buying it.  When I was checking out at target the kid ringing me up was all "so you're into the chobani craze too, huh?"  and I was all "yeah, I guess so"  totally unaware.

  • I do not get Greek Yogurt. I tried it and it was way too thick and gross for me. I love yogurt, just not Greek yogurt.

I didn't like it at first, either.  I added a teaspoon of honey and some granola.  Now that I'm used to the different texture, I LOVE Greek Yogurt. nom nom nom.

Actually, Yoplait makes a Greek yogurt now, too.  They have smaller (4 oz) containers, which is enough for me with some granola. A 4 pack of the smaler containers are $2.20 or so at Target.  Rainbow has the 6 oz on sale for 5/$4 sometimes too. :)

Yoplait isn't true Greek yogurt. It's Greek STYLE. They use gelatin to thicken it to give it the texture of Greek yogurt.

  • Good clarification.  It still tastes very similar, and has a ridiculous amount of protein, like the 'real' Greek yogurt.  It's half the cost, too, which scores major bonus points for me.
