How to get perfume smell out of wood dresser?

My grandmother recently passed away and we were given her bedroom set for my daughter that is due any day now.  It's a great set but it does have a strong perfumey smell to it and I'm not sure how to get it out.  Does anyone have any ideas or experiences with something like this?

From searching online it seems that using vinegar might be one option, but my DH says that then it'll all just "smell like vinegar and perfume mixed together."

Anyway, TIA for any help!

  • Have you tried sprinkling the drawers with baking soda? Maybe try a bowl of dry rice, it might soak up the smell of the perfume

  • The vinegar smell goes away pretty fast.

I'd use vinegar to wipe it down and then set it in direct sun.  It might take days.  Remember that the perfume has penetrated all the way through the wood, not just the surface.

  • I would spray/wipe it down with vinegar and loosely ball up newspaper and fill the drawers with that for a couple days.  Repeat as necessary with new newspaper.  Like PP said, it'll probably take a while.
  • Pull out all the drawers and place the dresser and the drawers outside on a clear day for 24 hours straight.
