Yesterday one of my neighbors warned me to set my boundaries quick with the other neighbors because they had no boundaries. They weren't kidding.
I was taking a nap today when I heard the doorbell ring, then the locks open, and someone INSIDE my house saying "Anyone home?" My neighbor has a key and decided to let herself and her 5-year-old daughter in. She told me that the people we're renting it from gave her a key for emergency purposes. And that the wive who used to lived there stayed at home, and watched her daughter for a few hours a day, and she was hoping I would do the same. I told her I had a wedding coming up and I would be working, so no.
She then says "Oh well maybe I can let my daughter in for a few hours while you're at work so she can play with your cats." I again tell her no, that I'm not comfortable with her having a key, and asked if she could give me whatever keys she had. She told me she wouldn't because the old neighbors told them they could have them, even with new renters. I told her I would be calling the landlord about it and have him deal with it then. I also told her if I caught her or her daughter in my house, key or not, I would call the police for trespassing. She walked off all huffy and I locked the door behind her.
A few hours later her husband came over to apologize for his "soon to be ex-wife's incredible behavior". I guess he's staying in the townhouse and she will be moving in the next few months.
I knew people in small towns were friendly but this place is not THAT small!

Re: odd neighbors
Wow! Talk about the nerve of people.
I think I'd be talking to the landlords about changing the locks. Who knows who else the "old" neighbors gave keys to. And yeah, who announces that they'll let their child come into your house when you're gone.
Crazy!

oooooooooooooooo.myyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.goooooooooooooooooood.
that is the craziest thing i've ever heard. talk about single white female!
i applaud you for being so assertive! i would call the landlord tout de suite and tell them, no demand to them, that they change the locks.
so the neighbor who talked about the boundaries... was he/she referring to this woman, or are there others???
unbelievable.
She was referring to this woman and her daughter. Yesterday she (the nice neighbor) told the daughter to leave me alone while I was unpacking the moving van. That's when she told me about the boundaries thing. I guess she has 2 daughters and she had to talk to the mom because the 5-year-old followed them everywhere. I guess crazy mom doesn't really watch her daughter during the day and the people who lived here kind of took her in.
oh good, well at least there aren't others! when you first said the one neighbor said others didn't have boundaries, i thought you were talking about her as the strange one because that seemed like an odd thing to say. but sounds like she was dead on. seems like the neighbor with the daughter has a major screw loose. can you imagine? "sure! she can come over whenever she wants and hang out with my cats while i'm not here!! why not?!" you have got to be kidding me. "oh yeah sometimes my boyfriend comes over when i'm not here and he likes little girls! that's not a problem, is it?" she doesn't know you from adam and is fine with her child spending time with you. that is not good.
Good god!! This is me reading this post:
Uh yeah... I would NOT even wait to call or hear from the landlord on this. My ass would be at Home Depot already getting new locks - or because I wouldn't want to leave my home unattended - I would call FI/family/whoever to go get new locks for me. That is UNACCEPTABLE.
