Stinky Diaper Pail!

I've recently started going longer between CD washes (3-4 days instead of every other day). While I like not having to do laundry as often, the ammonia smell from the diaper pail knocks us over every time we open it, and the nursery stinks. Right now we are using a cheap lidded plastic trash can with a hanging wetbag. I threw a rag with some lavender oil on it into the can (but not in the wetbag), but it doesn't seem to be helping. There isn't much, if any, poop in there because DD's poops have been very predictable lately, so we put in a disposable for that, and we use disposable wipes, and they all go in a diaper champ. So, it's all pee-stink.

Does anyone have any tips on how to cut down on the stink, or am I going to have to go back to washing every other day?

Re: Stinky Diaper Pail!

  • Minus the poo (still BM poo) this is us. Washing them every other day hasn't been happening and boy does that pail reek.
  • A box of baking soda in the pail (at the bottom under the bag) has helped us cut back on the stink.  (I've tried the spray they make to cut back on the smell and that didn't help at all.)

  • I put a arm and hammer thing that is made for refrigerators in there. But, I believe that most CD's will say don't let diapers go more then 2 days, 3 tops without washing otherwise the ammonia buildup can ruin the diapers or something.
  • I have the Rockin Green pail shaker thingy... and while I don't like the scent of it very much (it came in my Black Friday deal bag!) I love that it doesn't smell so bad in there

  • We wash every 3-4 days too.  Day one I leave the top off of the diaper pail...and it doesn't stink at all.  Then I do put the top on after day 1.  The stink is a lot less when I don't use the top from square one, I found.

  • The owner of the diaper lab recommends drilling a few holes in the top of your pail, too.  I haven't done it, but it's a thought.

  • Wouldn't drilling holes just make the whole nursery stink?  Ours isn't terrible, and I am always 3-4 days between washes, but I like the idea of baking soda in the bottom or even the rockin green thing (maybe on a good deal :-)  I feel like at least with the lid it is contained until you open it?? Hmmm

I was wondering this too. Our lid already doesn't shut all the way, so I think some air is getting in there and the nursery is sometimes rank. I am going to not go more than 3 days between washings and pick up some baking soda at the grocery store and see if that helps. Otherwise, I think we are going to get the Safety First diaper pail that our "IRL" CDing friends use (I just talked to them about it last night).

    Thanks for the tips!
