Gasoline smell in washing machine

So my husband had two shirts that he had got gasoline on. Not thinking anything about it, we put them into the washer and washed them on heavy duty cycle with lots of detergent. The clothes still smelled so we dried them outside but now my washing machine smells too!!! I have tried air drying it, bleach and water mixture on the rim, washing an empty cycle, and doing lots of research. I thought the smell was gone so I did a load of laundry and now this load smells like gas a lot as does my machine. Does anyone have any good suggestions that they have used?????/ Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

You're not supposed to put gasoline in the washer. It's flammable. It says that right on the washing machine lid. (At least mine does.)

Did you try putting borax in with the detergent? That has worked for me with small amounts of diesel other smells on clothes and such. This suggests baking soda and vinegar http://www.ehow.com/how_6571071_gasoline-smell-out-washing-machine.html

Due to an error on DH's part, I spent the better part of a week trying to get the gas smell out of my washer. The baking soda/vinegar mixture worked, but it took an entire box of baking soda and several wash cycles to get it out.
