Dishwasher not cleaning well

Hi ladies,

DH and I just bought a house and have a dishwasher for the first time.  It looks pretty old, probably built in the 80's.  It runs and the heated dry works, but it doesn't get the dishes clean, even on "super wash."  My mugs still have coffee rings in them and my utensils look like they were barely touched.  Is there something I can try to make it run better?  We were hoping to not replace it for a while, but maybe we are out of luck.

Re: Dishwasher not cleaning well

  • Have you tried cleaning it out? You can buy a commercial cleaner or use vinegar if you don't want to buy one. I have an old dishwasher and have tried many different things. I also take out some of the rubber along then edges that pop out and clean those.

I have found CLR or vinegar works best. However, after a few  uses it's back to the same disappointing cleaning. Adding borax to each wash may help too.

  • Thank you for your reply! I'll try some CLR.

  • I agree. When my dishwasher starts leaving spots on my dishes, I run an empty load with a big pour of vinegar in it, and it seems to eliminate the problem.

However, I have a new dishwasher, and it works fabulously 99% of the time.

When we bought our house, our sellers disclosed that the old dishwasher didn't work. It was missing a rack, and our inspector told us not to even turn it on for fear of flooding the kitchen.

So, we bought a new one. It's fabulous.

Try cleaning it first though. Sometimes that helps a lot.

  • Buy Lemi shine!

My parents had this same problem, they were about to buy a new dishwasher, because theirs suddenly started cleaning less and less and at some point just didn't clean anymore at all.

A sales person at Lowe's told them to first try lemi shine, before he would sell them a new one.

Apparently all (or most) states have banned all phosphates from dishwasher detergents. That's what caused my parents dishes not to be cleaned anymore. The phosphates are what loosened the dirt off your dishes. Without phosphates and just soap, you need something to replace that function.

My dad tried the lemi shine and it worked like a charm.

Also, don't use the detergent/all in one tablets. They seem convenient, but in all honesty, those are a big contributor to not getting things all the way clean. It takes about 3/4 of the cycle for them to dissolve, which means they don't start their cleaning powers until you're done with the washing and on to the last rinse. Just use powder with lemi shine and if that doesn't work at all, you probably do need a new dishwasher.

2nd the Lemishine, our is only a little over a year old but we have really hard water.  I thought the thing was broken until I saw the thing about the phosphates.  Tried vinegar, it just didn't cut it.  Lemishine = miracle My glassware is clear again.

  • Lemishine is AWESOME. Try different grocery stores in the dishwasher aisle. Not all places carry it, I had to try a couple of different stores. I have really hard water too and it's a miracle!

  • Vinegar works well. Is it not cleaning the dishes well or leaving a residue? We had a residue issue and switched to a cheaper aka no name brand dishwasher cleaner and it helped reduce residue.
