Top or Front Loader?

My H and I are under contract on a house that is being completely rehabbed.  The sellers are giving us a $1000 credit for a new washer/dryer and I am curious what everyone here prefers.  I'd love to do a front loader because then I could install a table space above them for baskets, folding, etc.  But I want to know the pros and cons of both.  Also, brands, models, etc. would be great.  Thanks!

Re: Top or Front Loader?

  • I have a FL and next time I'll get a TL.  It's nice with the FL that you can stack them.  I prefer a TL because I can soak things, I can add things if I forget, and I just think overall they're more convenient.

We have front loader in our summer home and I hate it! Constantly bending over to drag wet laundry out is not fun and the FL's have a tendency to smell, unless you keep the door open to air it out. Personally I would never buy another FL.

When it was time to get a new washer for our primary home, we bought the Whirlpool Cabrio top loader and I LOVE it!!  It is agitorless, so there is tons of room and I can even put king size comforters in it.

I have no issues with my top loader and think it's great.

That would be the FL if you don't let it air out (which is the same with a TL, but most people leave the top open on a TL without even thinking about it anyway.  Anytime you let something stay wet you  run the high chance of mold growing.

  • We needed stackables, so we went with the front loader to get more machine capacity.  Our washer gets moldy even with the door and soap door left open.  Drives me BSC.  Whenever we move, a larger laundry room is definitely a priority!

  • I have a FL and absolutely love it, we keep the door open on the washer to let it dry, then close it and never have a problem. Like some PP's said you keep yout TL door open anyway so I don't see much of a difference. I also buy the cleaner you can and periodically clean my FL.  I've never had a mold issue with my set

  • We have a FL and I keep the door shut all the time and haven't experienced a problem with mold, or a smell. We have a Kenmore and for the most part we've been pretty happy.

  • I had a TL and it broke down mid-wash!  I was dead-set on getting another TL, but after researching, I decided on a FL.  I got the Whirlpool Duet and I LOVE it!  It is so much bigger than a TL, so I do less loads of laundry.  I know a lot of ppl commented on not liking that they can't just add clothes to the the wash if they forgot, but there is a button that stops that wash so you can add more clothes if you forgot any.   I will never go back to a TL.

  • We have a top loader and we've always wanted a front loader. Our comforter doesn't fit in a top loader, and front loaders are more gentle and use less water.

I have a Samsung Front loader and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! Its one of the steam ones (yeah Black Friday Sale) and would get another one in heart beat if I had a need for two sets.

I've heard of the problems with the mold and the research I've done says there are a couple ways to fix it. There's some cleaner things (That are $$$$) you can use or run a cycle of super hot water a bleach once a month or so. Since I have white sheets and towels I do that anyway so its not inconvenient.

If you did go with a front loader and have the extra money I HIGHLY recommend getting the pedestals. My MIL didn't at first with her FL and went back and bought them because it was a PAIN to bend over to rotate the wet stuff into the dryer.

  • My father is giving me a washer/dryer as a wedding gift (any one I want!), and when we do take him up on it (we're a mil family right now, so big purchases like that are inconvenient), we're getting a TL, because I hear those be the best for the theoretical cloth diapering I'll be doing on my non-existent theoretical children.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
