runners

now that bsr is over (congrats!) what are your new running goals? how are you going to keep up motivation?

i signed up for the Oddyssey half marathon. i was talked into it with logic of - what is 3 more miles if you can do the bsr 10...

and good luck to the Komen 5k racers on Sunday! i hope you get great weather!

Re: runners

  • Haha, I was thinking about the Oddysey Half...but they don't have finisher medals.  I really want a finisher medal if I'm doing a half, haha, not a pint glass!

I am doing some other races in June - the Warrior Dash and some other local races TBD.  Maybe a 4-miler, a 5-miler if I can get my act together and make the decision to register.

I do want to do a half in the fall, but not sure which one...something nice and flat, though!

Racing definitely keeps up my motivation!

  • No worries! "All finishers will receive an official ODDyssey Half Marathon pint glass AND a finishers medal for the 2011 race! "

I'm thinking i'll do the ING rock and roll in the fall.

  • They must have changed it since the last time I checked the website!  Drats, I have plans to be at the beach that weekend.  Oh well, I shall run my little heart out at the beach instead.

I've heard the RNR halfs are a lot of fun...I am definitely considering that one too!  I know they are for-profit, which kind of irks me, but it looks like a relatively flat course for my first half.

  • I have a half marathon on May 29th (in Buffalo, NY).  I figured I "trained" for 10 might as well run 3 more.  I am also running a 5 mile race in June.  I was thinking of running the Philly half marathon in November also but that is a long way off.

    This is what is upcoming:

Dark and Dirty--6.66 night time trail run

Charlie Horse Half Marathon--at Blue Marsh Lake (outside of Reading), dramatic inclines

A bunch of Xterra mid-week races (mostly 5Ks).

    Media 5 Miler

    Schuylkill Canal Day Trail Run

    Half-Wit Half Marathon

We are not doing RnR Half Marathon this year. After last year, I had serious reservations about participating in an RnR event ever again. I believe the priority of RnR is to make money, and the safety of runners is secondary. This was quite evident in 2010. I would MUCH rather do the Half as part of the Philadelphia Marathon (which is what we are probably going to do--still on the fence about half versus full).

ps: the motivation comes from the fact that I have competed in many of these races before and I have times from 2010 that I want to beat, so I get out there and RUN!  :-)

Would you mind sharing what your experience was like?  I did this race in 2007 and had a good time.  I was planning on doing it again this year but I was curious to see if something changed - I definitely do not want to put myself in an unsafe situation.

Back in 2007, it was still the Philadelphia Distance Run.  I believe in 2008 or 2009, the Competitor Group (owner of the "Rock and Roll" series) bought the rights to the run.  The cost is exorbitant for a half marathon--$85 if you register before mid-June; $95 after.

The course route was changed between 2009 and 2010--we ran through the city, but instead of (in 2009) MLK Drive -> Falls Bridge -> Kelly Drive -> Art Museum Finish, the route was reversed. In 2010, there was no evidence of emergency personnel while running from the Falls Bridge on MLK Drive. Those last 4 miles can be hard (especially for a first time half-marathoner) and that's when you see people get dehydrated and/or injured.  Thankfully, the 2010 race was not too hot, but it was warm.

The other issue I have with the RnR series is that even with all of this money you are paying, you cannot have someone pickup your bib without PAYING $25.   Each participant is allowed to pick up one other person's bib, but you are hit with the fee if you want to help out more than one person.   They do not share this information until the week of the event when your confirmation email comes.  And yes, they are VERY stringent (much more so that BSR).

Thanks for sharing that info!  Boo - that stinks that a race company does not sound runner friendly!

  • I'm probably going to do the 8k that's part of the Philly Marathon in November. I may do the half, but training for half marathons stress me out (and it's so time consuming).

I want to do some 5 and 10ks this summer/fall, too. Erbur may have convinced me to get some trail shoes, so we'll see. :)
