Father got into car accident...need help?

My father got into a car accident two days ago. The other driver was found at fault. When they were exchanging their insurance information, my father realized his auto insurance had lapsed a week ago. Now the other drivers company is refusing to pay the claim because my father was driving uninsured. Can he do something about it like make a backdated check to his insurance company. Do auto insurance companies give any grace period where you get some time to renew your policy?

Re: Father got into car accident...need help?

  • I've done that, but didn't get into an accident in the meantime.  They might not be so amenable to that in this situation.  I think the only way he'll find out is to ask them.  Good luck.

    That is fraud.

No. In PA, you are required by law to have minimum coverage levels of auto insurance.

  • pretty sure he is screwed. the insurance company sends out notices to renew so its not like it lapse without a notice.
  • Unfortunately, it sounds like he is screwed.

Sorry to be late to this party....... Most companies do have a grace period, depending on the company the amount of time varies. Also PA is not a pay or play state, so I would press the other company.

  • I would definitely look into the grace period.  That of course could depend on the company, but I know one time I forgot to pay my semi annual premium.  They sent me a letter a couple weeks later saying they were continuing my coverage, but ending it as of a certain date...I want to say a month after it was due...if I didn't pay.
  • I hate to say this but it doesn?t seem like much can be done now. He should talk to his auto insurance company and appeal to their compassion. I doubt it?ll do any good, but no harm in trying.
