XP: Not sure how to handle this...

DH works right next to the Suffield, CT pound. Usually there's only 1 or 2 dogs in there if any at all. Well today a cop came over to DH's workplace with a pitt/boxer mix that's been at the pound for a little while now. He played with the dog, who he said was really sweet. The back story is here on Petfinder (http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/19451738)Sorry I'm in safari, which hates to link.

Long story short, Officer Al can't keep him because he already has 2 rescues at home, but he has been taking the time to train this dog. He's been saved twice from being put down already, and the cop is trying to get it so he doesn't have to fight to have him saved a third time. DH is going to bring Papa (our dog) to work this week so the 2 can play together. But the most we can really do is Foster him.

Is there something more I can do? Should I contact the pitbull rescue down in southern CT? In other words, how do you guys handle stuff like this? There's TONS of shelter dogs that need to be rescued I know I know. Would it be best if he was just put down (which makes me SO sad, I mean the dogs come this far)? Should we just foster him and keep sending word out that he's available for adoption? Do you guys in the MA, RI, NY know of anyone who would want him? Just want to see what you guys think.

  • Aw, poor guy!!

I'd say if he and Papa get along well, and if you can afford it...I'd foster him and continue to spread the word.  Like you said, you could try to contact some breed-specific rescues in the meantime.

  • Ugh.  That's a tough situation!

Like Hannah said, if he and Papa get along well, and you can afford to, it would be great if you could foster him.  Obviously, though, that's easier said than done, especially considering his condition.  Plus, even if they get along well outside of the home, it could be a whole different story at your home, and you don't want to chance it negatively affecting Papa.

I would most definitely contact some pit and boxer rescues in the area to see if they have room for him.  I think those places are typically pretty full, but you never know...you might get lucky!  Especially given his back story.

Yeah, I mean financially we could foster him. But I told DH he needs to find out if the dog has been treated for his HW. That's where it would start to cost us a lot of money.

But until then I'll just keep spreading the word and contacting bully/boxer rescues.

  • That's what I was thinking, too...whether you would have to pay for the treatments.  That wouldn't be (as) worth it...or easy to do, I'm sure (at least not for us!).

Keep us posted!  I hope you're able to find someone who can take that sweet boy!

definitely let us know what's happening with this pooch.  How's his training going?  It seems extra sad that he might be put down when he's learning how to be trained.

Ok I found out the town did raise money for his HW treatment. Which I guess he started last week.

I'm trying really hard to spread the word. I don't know how the cop found out about the dog, or why he became so attached, unless he was the one who found him out in the field. But he has put so much time and effort into saving the dog.

I'll keep you guys posted. But I'm really hoping we find someone soon.

  • Definitely call the rescue asap.  You may also want to try Buddy Dog - they're in eastern MA, but they might be able to take him in if you can't keep him.  They were first on our list to adopt from before we got Jack.

    Good luck!
