when we can meet baby Ryan!!! yippee. my appt w/ the Dr is at 2:30. i found out last week that i can opt for a c/s b/c i had fetal trauma the 1st time b/c they had to break liams shoulder to get him out.
so as i am still nervous about the surgery i can breathe a sigh of relief that i dont have to go through that again. ahhhhhh.
and c/s mamas out there want to give me some advice or tips????
Re: i find out today.....
yay!
no advice on c/s obviously, but so glad you get to meet your little girl soon!
exciting!! I had a scheduled c/s with M because she was breech and my one piece of advice would be to keep on top of the meds! Don't wait until you're in pain to ask for your next dose! My recovery was not bad at all, and I think by the time I was home I was off the pain killers and just taking advil.
Other little tips... you're going to be in the hospital longer so pack accordingly.
You might want to bring a small pillow that you can hold against your incision when you need to cough or sneeze
Take all the help you can get, you won't be able to lift Ryan from her crib, or do any lifting for that matter so having others around to help is essential. Don't over do it when you get home!
From what I've heard scheduled vs. emergency c/s, it is an easier recovery after the scheduled since your body hasn't gone through labor, you are better rested going into the surgery.
I had a vag delivery w/J and she got stuck. I had a c/s with N & she went directly to the NICU, so my "baby time" after a c/s would (hopefully) be different from yours.
Walk as soon and as much as you can. I was asking to get up almost 2hrs after N was born, but they didn't let me for another hr after that. I had to be able to walk before I could be brought up to the NICU. They told me be back in about 30-45minutes - even though I was sitting the entire time, I had to be easy. N's cardi came in and I didn't get back to my room until an hour & a half after I left. I NEEDED to be back in bed, I was feeling it.
I stayed on top of my meds, but since I have a drug allergy, finding a cocktail that worked for me did leave me in a bit of pain while figuring it out.
Gas pain in the shoulder/neck is painful as hell, but manageable w/ gas-x & a heating pad
Having a very attached toddler was tough b/c I wanted to pick her up. I kinda supported her while she climbed up to wherever I was. I was told often that I was over-doing it - some of the time they were right.
Yay!
I had a c-section with A after 26 hours of labor going no where. My biggest advice like the others so far is to stay on top of the meds! The pain will just hit you out of the blue and then takes a while to go away once you take the meds. Take them in advance... don't try and be a hero.
Another big one..... have a pillow or thick blanket to hold over the incision when you need to laugh/sneeze/cough/cry/move.... My uncle came to visit and said some funny joke with made me laugh, which then hurt so bad and turned my laughing into crying. They had no idea what was wrong and all thought it was me crying b/c of laughing that they kept at it. They didn't realize until I yelled!
Have plenty of help b/c you will not be able to pick her up out of the bassinet... if Ryan is in the room with you, make sure someone else is in there too. I had a rough recovery and had to have someone in the room with me all the time when A was there, and even overnight.
The worst thing for a c-section recovery is trying to do too much before you are ready. I did, and I ended up opening back up in a small section of the incision... no fun.
Wahooo!!!
I had an emergency C-Section, along with a scheduled. Alaina was to big (9lbs 6 oz @40 weeks), and Ben was 8 lbs 8oz (38 weeks 1 day).
You can not have a planned CSection prior to 39 weeks I guess? (there were reasons why I went at 38 weeks) Thats what my doc said anywho.
I didn't think recovery was bad at all. You will not be able to get up and/or shower until day 3. With Alaina I was knocked out during the section, but with Ben I was awake the whole time.
You won't be able to drive once you get out (I got out 4 days later).. plan on 2 weeks off from driving (I drove after a week and a half.. b/c I wanted to slit my wrists staying in the house).
I did't go home with any pain meds... just motrin. I can't see my scar now...
Easy Peazy.
I was able to shower as soon as the catheter was out, but I had to have that in for at least 24hrs. I showered about .3 seconds after it was out.
I had N on Monday and was released on Thursday, at my request. I was scheduled to be there until Friday and could have stayed longer if I asked too (I would have moved from the 4th floor L&D/recovery at UMass, to a 5th floor NICU family room).
I was advised not to drive for 6w. I made it 2 before I felt like I had to drive on my own again.
My c/s f/u was at 3w pp.
Definitely get up and walk around as soon as you possibly can. I think I was up about 12 hours after surgery, getting out of bed that first time was probably the most painful thing of my life, but I felt sooo much better after walking around a bit!
And I forgot about the driving part...it was 2 weeks for me too.
thanks ladies!!!
the thing is my recovery with liam was the same if not worse then you are all describing. i couldnt get out of bed, i only showered once b/c of that. i had to sit on a friggen ice pack for days. i couldnt drive for 2 weeks, couldnt pick up anything besides the baby. mike was amazing. and he will be off for 2 weeks again only this time we will have a 2yr old too. yikes!
is this day dragging or what?? lol
oh and Jen, i am sooooo hoping that b/c of her size and the amt of pain i am in they will say that the end of this week is OK. close enough to 39 weeks i would think. we'll see!!!
stay in the hospital as long as you can. I felt great after both my c/s...with #2 I went home a day early because I felt so great and everything was fine...looking back I wish I stayed that extra day. I did to much and it took a bit longer to heal completely since I wanted to be home with C and hubby
Good Luck!!!
