With the crazy winter/spring we've had, do you think the cold is officially gone and with it the risk of frost?
I'd like to plant a few window boxes and pots of flowers before we take pictures for our selling listing - but I don't want to do so prematurely and then have to worry about losing everything to a sudden frost or have to cover them every night.
Most pots/windowboxes would be fairly sheltered and we are pretty central in the cities (urban heat bubble) - so I am pretty confident I'd be safe in a normal year, but this year has been anything but normal.
What would you do?
Oh - I'd likely be planting something fairly delicate like impatiens. Not my favorite flower, but it is one of the few that works well for us.
Re: Frost/cold still a risk? - Gardening question
wait. last frost date is may 15th so they recommend you hold off on soft stemmed plantings until after then.
Thanks - that's what I've always heard too. Do you think the crazy weather this year will affect that at all? I won't have time to plant anything before this weekend - but I'd like to get it done ASAP - next week if possible. Normally I'd think that would be OK, but since we had snow and flurries barely two weeks ago, I just don't know!
I suppose if I can't get things planted before the REA takes pictures, it isn't the end of the world. I have pictures from years past that she can use until this years plants are established and pretty.
I think a part of is that I have been holed up inside packing, cleaning and updating that I desperately want an excuse to be outside!
are the window boxes removable so you could bring them inside? or could you just cover them with a light sheet at night? if you could do either of those things, i think you'd be good to go.
how did the floors turn out?
The floors look great - - especially considering how cheap they are (vinyl "tiles"). It was just the process that was absolutely maddening! I was almost in tears Friday night when he said he'd have to come back the next morning to finish up*. Seriously, the guy was crazy. Chris thinks he probably was a coke-head because he was SO hyper and talkative . . . and of course, the next morning, he sure did seem to be sniffing an awful lot! Oh well, it's done now and while at first, I wasn't sure about the new floor color complimenting the carpet and walls, I think it is growing on me.
As for the flowers - yeah, I could move them to a sheltered spot or put them in the garage if there is a risk. Maybe that would be best . . .
* for those who could not read my ranting updates on FB (which, I think is everyone but strength!), our handyman was incredibly talkative and couldn't pick up on normal social cues that it is getting late and he should leave - or that I find him incredibly annoying and inappropriately friendly. Quick rundown of everything:
1) he was supposed to install the new floors on Thursday but canceled at the last minute and said he'd do it at 4 on Friday.
2) I get home early from work on Friday and get things cleaned/packed away - including everything out of the fridge and freezer to move it - and he arrives, but then sits in his car for a half hour chatting on the phone - - finally starts the work almost an hour late.
3) Chats our ears off (even though we're doing everything we can to prevent conversation - reading a magazine, watching TV, on the computer - not answering other than "yes/.no".) - - and while the project was supposed to take 5 hours max, after 6 hours and a late trip to HD, he is still not finished, but stands there talking to me while I am clearly falling asleep and wanting him to leave (it was almost 11 PM and DH was gone at a rehearsal so I had to deal with him).
4) Says he'll be back at 10 AM the next day - but doesn't show up until 11 and gives no reason why he is late.
5) While chatting away, he actually does get the work done - eventually - after NINE HOURS!! Nine hours to replace 70 sq.ft of flooring with simple stick and slap tiles. Ugh!
Ohh, and he kept asking me if DH was often gone in the evenings and what time did he get home and alllll sorts of other things that made me REALLY uncomfortable! Of course I didn't answer his questions - not that I could really get an answer in since he was talking SO. DAMN. MUCH!
I would love to do this - unfortuanately, every time I've tried to work with pansies, they have not fared well (that sounds sooooo strange!) . We don't get enough sunlight for them to thrive, so it would be a very temporary solution and not worth the work. I do really like them though and wish I could use them instead of impatiens!
I think you would be okay if you cover them on the cold nights.
I've always heard the last frost date as May 21 for St. Paul and Minneapolis according to the USDA.
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
