My DH and I are moving to the Sacramento area in about 2 weeks. DH got a job in Rocklin, specifically. I thought we had housing nailed down (a house rental in Roseville) but it fell through last week. So now I'm in total panic mode - no address to tell the movers.
We're looking for a house or apartment within 1/2 hour driving distance of Rocklin. We've been looking in Rocklin, Roseville, Auburn, and Lincoln. Rent cost isn't much of an issue, but we have 3 pets, so we're limited. Can anyone recommend some other areas to look in or areas to specifically avoid? HELP!
Also, hi! Nice to meet you all. I'm sure I'll hang around more after the craziness of the move wears off. ![]()

Re: Moving to the Sacramento Area Question
I live in Carmichael now, and lived in Sacramento proper (near Sac State) for years before that and have worked in Roseville for almost 5 years. It has never taken me more than 30 minutes to drive to/from work.
I would actually probably avoid Lincoln, Loomis, and especially Auburn as those area opposite commute areas (people from Auburn/Loomis and Rocklin/Roseville typically live there and work in Sacramento), and try to stay South and West of Rocklin. Citrus Heights, Orangevale, Fair Oaks, Carmichael...You have to be careful b/c there are some pretty sketch areas in there too though. Do you have anyone around here who can scope out a particular area/place to tell you if it's alright? Because we live in a really nice area within Carmichael, but there are some areas I would never ever live within Carmichael too. Same thing for Sacramento, Citrus Heights and Orangevale, etc. It'd be hard to just randomly pick a place without input from someone seeing it/knowing the area. Good luck, I know that's probably not super helpful.
Are you working with a Realtor at all? I would see if you can find one that works with renters. I'm in West Roseville and know that there are rentals that pop up all the time. I think you'll love living in the Roseville and Rocklin area. I personally wouldn't do the Citrus Height or Orangevale route as your Dh would have to commute surface streets to work as neither are close to a freeway.
If he's working on the Sierra College side of Rocklin, I would look in Loomis, Granite Bay, East Rocklin and East Roseville. If he's on the Stanford Ranch/Whitney Park side of Rocklin, I would look in West Roseville, West Rocklin and Lincoln.
Good luck and welcome to the board.
I wouldn't avoid Loomis--if her husband is working in Rocklin, odds are he can commute there from Loomis w/o taking the freeway...in my experience, the traffic doesn't get too bad WB 80 until you hit Douglas/Roseville-area...sometimes 65 can cause 80 to back up, but if you're in the fast lane you can mostly avoid it...
I agree with Steph on making sure you "check out" areas of CH, Orangevale, etc--as she stated, there are nice areas, and not-as-nice areas.
In sum, I suggest Loomis, Rocklin, Lincoln, and Roseville. Why commute any farther if you don't have to?
Obviously, I prefer living IN Sac to living anywhere else, which is why we bought where we did...but if I knew nothing about the area and was looking just to rent with a mimimal commute, I'd stick to Roseville/Rocklin.
I know what you mean---Rocklin/Roseville are much bigger than Loomis and probably much easier to adjust to because they have more to do. I also agree re: Lincoln---65 seems pretty gnarly during commuting hours.
I didn't mean to come off aggressive
I disagree with the Lincoln remark for the same reason you disagreed with the Loomis one. Depending on what side of Rocklin he's working on Lincoln might be just fine and he might be able to take surface streets to work. Or the short distance he's going might not matter on 65.
Wow! Thanks for all the help. The area he's working in is the northern section of Rocklin. Near the top of Sunset, if that helps any.
DH's commute right now is about 30 minutes and he's okay with that, but not much more. We've got a couple possibilities for housing right now - one complex in Citrus Heights, one in Roseville near the Galleria, one in Rocklin, and one with an Auburn mailing address that's in the boonies pretty much halfway between Auburn and Lincoln.
I will expand the search to include Loomis as well.
It seems as though avoiding freeway use - I-80 and 65 is what we are looking for, right?
I agree with Stef that based on his location I would go with the Roseville location and the Rocklin one first. The Roseville one might be closer to his job depending where in Rocklin the job is. I also agree with making sure you know what part of CH the complex is because it could be super nice or super not.
The Auburn sounds pretty far and he would have to take I-80 toward Sac and that will be a mess. I'd cross that one off the list. For his location in Rocklin, I'd look at Lincoln over Loomis because he'd have to cross town on surface streets to get from Loomis to the Sunset area. Lincoln, he can take the back roads. Specifically if you find something in the 12 Bridges area.
