Controversial Poll: Stem Cells (clicky)

My family, namely my dad, has had to make some decisions about this recently and I was just curious how most people felt about it. [Poll]

  • So FOR this - I really don't understand why this is being stalled out.

  • I am all for this.  The only thing I'm not sold on is embryonic cells.  If a couple goes through IVF and have embryos they'd otherwise destroy, that's one thing.  I don't like the idea of creating embryos strictly for research

  • I am a SS.

I do not want to get in any sort of debate, but IMHO I think the RESEARCH is good.

pretty much how I feel about it, too.

  • The reason I'm asking is because my dad has Parkinson's Disease.  He is currently participating in a study and has the option to get stem cell transplants to see if it will help relieve his symptoms.

Side note- Michael J. Fox got him into the study (they played in a golf outing together last summer and MJ could tell that my dad had Parkinson's disease after his first swing of the golf club, he didn't know he had it before this- crazy).  Apparently they are best buddies now and email and talk on the phone all the time- even crazier!

That's crazy but sounds like it's been great for your dad!

If he decides to go with the study, I hope all goes well for him!!

  • I am totally for this - there are SO MANY terrible diseases that could benefit. I also agree that it?s a slippery slope and has to be regulated.

I feel the same way.  This type of research could help so many people!  But as MrsRenee said, I'm not sold on the use of embrionic cells.

  • I support the use of embryonic stem cells in research and potentially in therapies. To me NOT using stem cells from terminated pregnancies seems wasteful and since termination is legal in the US I don't really understand why the use of embryonic stem cells should be limited.

IMHO I don't think an embryo can be considered a person until it is at least 70 cells or so, therefore I wouldn't have a problem with the creation of such stem cells either. Obviously this is an issue that could be debated endlessly though without resolution.

  • I am for it!!! My niece has diabetes and stem cell research is one step closer to helping her.
