I *think* we're moving! Whoa!

DH was offered a job in WV yesterday! It's a huge company (the company is actually a fairly huge entity here in Pittsburgh, but they have satellite offices in various places between here & WV), a salary that he is far more deserving of, not super far away from our families (2 hours) and he would hopefully transfer back to their main office in Pittsburgh in a few years or so (unless we really end up loving WV...). Besides the fact that we JUST bought our house in August, and the fact that we're both scared shiiitless to move away, we just can't come up with good enough reasons to decline the offer.

He will still have to pass a physical (which may be easier said than done for him), and I will have to stay here until we figure out what to do with the house (sell vs. rent), so we would probably have to be long distance for awhile. But....I'm quietly going to begin learning how to play the banjo, just incase....

Re: I *think* we're moving! Whoa!

  • That sounds so exciting!  If you think you'll end up in Pittsburgh in a couple years, it might be easier to just rent your house out and then sell it if you decide not to move back.  My parents have a property they rent out and they like the extra income.  Maybe rent it out a little higher than the mortgage payment.

West Virginia... I don't know anything about that state, lol.

You might have a good point. Though, I would not consider this home our forever home (I don't care how much DH doesn't want to go through a closing process again), so I would kinda hope that if we were moving back that we would be able to afford our forever home by then. It's a lot to think about though, so I'm just trying to take it one step at a time and not get ahead of myself (which is very hard to do).

    What I know about WV:

    Banjo's
Lack of dental insurance = lack of teeth
    Country Road 7
They like to burn couches. I don't like to burn couches, so I hope to avoid this.

  • haha I read the name of this post, and then did a double take at who posted it!

I say that if you guys are up for it, it's a great experience, and it's great that he would be getting a better salary!

    good luck making a decision!

  • I did a double-take too when I read the post title and who posted it! If you are thinking of renting out your house if you want to move back to Pittsburgh eventually, my BIL rents out his house through an agency so they take care of everything and the cost is minimal compared to what he brings in from the rent. Just something to think about.

Some parts of WV aren't that bad :) I'm from W. MD originally and my grandparents live in WV (but they do live in the hick part lol). I would assume if he's with a pretty big company that you'll be in a nicer area.

  • LOL, why is everyone so shocked I posted this?!

He accepted the job, but still has to go through a physical. He's holding his breath on all of this until he gets through the physical and the job offer is still standing (I think he's so freaked out about the physical because of the physical he had to go through for the military a few years ago).

You would think that the company would have put them up in a decent area. But....no. Take a gander:

    Jane Lew, WV

The office does not have an actual address (though it must, for the sake of mail). His directions told him to get off of I79, turn on to Country Road 8 then make left on to Country Road 7. You guys, the names of the roads are Country Road XXX!!! AAhhhh!!

We'll be looking to settle in somewhere a bit more north, hopefully in a more suburby area with a bit more going for it. If someone makes me live in Jane Lew...I might not survive. I am too much of a city girl, we can't spring too much hick town on her at once!!!

I talked to my parents about the cost of a property mgmt company, since they were looking in to flipping and renting houses not long ago and became super familiar with the ins & outs. It's a definite possibility. On the other hand, his parents rent out a house (2 unit apartments) themselves and DH is their legal advice go to when it comes to tenant issues, so it might be possible. But then again, I know how much FIL goes through when it's time to get a unit ready for a new tenant (i.e., painting, fixing, replacing, etc), so having a mgmt company might be well worth it.

We're sort of in a holding pattern for now. He's accepted the job, they're working things out to see what/how much he qualifies for relocation costs and scheduling him for a physical. I hope that we have a solidified "We're moving, DH starts the new job on Monday, XX, we're officially voluntarily becoming WV residents" later next week.

Next is to figure out how to find me a new job so that I can go down there to join him sooner then later!

  • According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.6 km?), all land.

Maybe the next town over is bigger?  OMG that's small.  Is his job with the same company he's with now?  It seems really strange that they don't have an address.  Do we know Country Road XX won't take him to some abandoned warehouse?

  • Well congrats on the job for DH!  It's a big move, but hopefully everything works out for you guys.  Good luck on figuring out what to do with the house...I'm not sure about renting vs. selling, just do your research no matter what you decide to do.  Congrats!

Lol, yes we know that it is an office. He was there for the first interview.

No, this job is not with his current company. He is a lawyer, so he is going from working with a firm to working with a company (a large coal company in the area).

We never planned on living in Jane Lew, it's just a matter of figuring out which nearby town to head towards!

Holy crap, West Virginia. First off, I had no idea it was only a 2 hour drive from Pennsylvania - that's great for you guys!

As for the house...I'd probably want to sell, just so it wasn't hanging over my head. BUT if you'll lose a ton of money on it, I'd probably rent. I'm real helpful, I know.

I don't know jack about WV, so I'm looking forward to hearing about where you guys eventually choose to move! This is so exciting!

Haha, yeah, we're pretty close to WV. It's really not that far to the state line-45 minutes maybe? An hour? I don't know. We're in Pittsburgh, so we're pretty far south in the state. I guess it works out in this instance!

We're totally torn on the house. We bought the for 108k, mortgaged 87k and I think we could throw it back on the market for the price we bought it for, maybe a tiny bit more if we take care of the flooring and paint the tiles in the bathroom, oh and clean up the yard and do some minor landscaping. But who really knows what it will go for, ya know? We paid the asking price because we knew it was actually accurate (the woman selling it was pissed because she realized she should have asked for more! We knew what the house was worth), but ideally would like to walk away with as much of our downpayment as possible. I go back and forth between trying to rent it and trying to sell it. Either way, we have no idea how long it might take to get it taken care of. Here's hoping it goes fast!

I don't know jack about WV either!!! We're far more excited now that the decision has been made though. DH still has to go through a physical, so here's hoping that's just a formality.
