We are getting new carpet in our family room and Glen is finally letting me paint the awful 70s wood paneling! We are getting a neutral carpet color (we're thinking beige). We have burgundy colored furniture. It's dark burgundy. We aren't crazy about it, but we aren't looking to replace it for a long time. Now, what color paint would look nice without clashing with burgundy? I really dont want to do beige/white. My entire house is either a beige or pale yellow. I'm so sick of those colors. I was maybe thinking a very light green? Help!!

I like beiges/light yellows, so I'm no help in the "different color" area, but have you been to valspar.com?

They have a virtual painter that may help you out. It's how I picked out the green for our bedroom. You can find a burgundy paint color similar to your furniture and match paint colors to it. It's a fun way to waste your time. Wink

Yeah, Danny won't let me paint any fun colors, so I'm stuck with neutrals. I love red walls, but with burgundy furniture, I don't think that would work. Sad

i know you said no beige, but my first thought was a nice cream color. You could go with like a Tuscan gold, depending on the shade of burgundy....

Unfortunately with burgundy furniture, I think you're kind of limited...

My entire house is neutral (with the exception of the baby's room which is half neutral). It's all beige, ivory, white and pale yellow. It's been this way for 3 years. I'm ready to add some color! Burgundy is just a hard color to work with. Stupid furniture!

As far as contrast, would you do darker carpet/lighter walls or lighter carpet/darker walls? Both in the same family of color, but different shades.

Paint the room with the burgundy a pale yellow/gold and go BOLD in another room to even it out! Stick out tongue

I wish I could! My husband won't do it for me. I already asked, lol!!! Maybe when I'm 'off' with the baby I can paint the upstairs a new color!

Well, the reason I asked was to help you decide. When we were painting our Wall of Death we were in a similar situation -- brown furniture, and the rest was up to us. So instead of just painting first and figuring out the rest from there, I picked a fabric that would become curtains, accent pillows, etc and pulled colors from it for paint.

Just saying, it might help with ideas for matching paint rather than trying to figure it out blindly.

I think you could go with a burnt orange color. Not too bright, but not a sherberty-orange color either. That would be bold.

I think the gray that DD suggested would also look nice. Is it in a room that gets a lot of light?

I have a bag that is burgundy, cream, burnt orange and an olive green color. It's colorful without being too much (at least for me!) Here's a teeny, tiny swatch of what it looks like.

Aw, shucks.... I thought I had it! Cool I do like the swatch of Law's bag though. I'm voting on a shade of orange.

Like the colors on that bag! I'll have to look at the furniture again. I feel like it's a burgundy/eggplant color. It might be too purple. If I dud orange, I think I could only do an accent wall. It's a large dark room.

I think MB is spot on. Find a fabric that has the same burgundy color in it and use it as inspiration for the room. I would definitely try to get curtains in and throw pillows that have both the furniture color and whatever wall color you choose so that it all ties in.

This one has a lot of bold colors and would help tie into the furniture:

I have burgundy furniture and we have 3 tan and 1 burgundy wall. If we ever paint again before we get new furniture I want a gray. I detest green in general but I especially detest green and red together unless its Christmas time. Green as an accent, sure, but as a main player,don't love. I think your furniture is bold so I'd do a more neutral wall and do fun pillows, curtains and area rug if you need it.

Is your furniture more red-burgundy? Ours is more purple-burgundy.

I'm still sicking with gray. Something like this:

I know that couch isn't burgundy, but it's dark and kind of gives you the idea. I love the fabric that Riss posted. I think something like those colors in the curtains, pillows, accessories and gray walls would be fabulous.

I'm thinking maybe a sage green for the walls. Either that or maybe get a slipcover for the sofa to change it's color instead?
