DH job post -- final update

backstory:  DH had two potential jobs. . .firm offer from Job A, while he wanted to work for Job B, which would have better salary, better benefits, worse hours, and was dragging their feet making offers.  Basically, through the interview process he preferred job B, but by the time offers were in, he preferred job A. Last week, Job A offered a position. . .he ended up asking them for more time to decide.  New deadline was yesterday at 1pm.

Called Job B yesterday morning and was basically like, "I have a deadline at 1pm.  If you want me, offer before then."  Job B says, "we'll call you in the afternoon with our decision."  DH takes that as, "Job B has decided on another candidate and just refuses to tell me that", and calls up Job A to accept their offer.  Job B calls at like 5pm yesterday to reject him.

I'm sure none of you care which job my DH ended up picking, but this drama has consumed my life for weeks, so I guess you're hearing about it anyway. :)

We've decided Job A was meant to be.  It was the first offer he had, and it was the job he accepted.  He'll be working in a school with teenagers who can't function in the public school setting (behavioral reasons, mostly).  It's a 12 month position, so no summers off, but he does has a steady 8-4 schedule, which is not as common as a social worker.

He'll be in the Baltimore area while I'm in DC, which is a little bit annoying, but we bought our house in a central location in between the two cities knowing that this was a possibility.

Hooray two income family!

  • I agree, seems Job A was meant to be! Yay for two incomes!

  • Oh good for him. How $hitty of Job B, even if they were going to offer him the job it sounds like they sort of strung him along with no good reason.

So glad he took job A and congrats to him!!!

  • Looks like A was the one anyways.  And yeah for an 8-4 gig.

I hate when companies string people along.  Honestly if that's their hiring policy, it's probably good that he isn't working there.

  • SO glad it is all resolved - you must be so relieved!!

Putting my HR hat on here -- let's not be so quick to judge Company B.

About company B: For all you know, there was someone else doing to them the exact same thing your husband was doing with Company A.   They could have had a candidate who received an offer, was waiting to hear from another company, they said, "tell us by Monday (so we can offer this job to someone else if you say no)", and the person said yes, and they could officially reject other people.

Similarly, there is potentially someone else's husband, for whom your Company A was their pick, too, and they've been waiting for an offer, and your husband asked THEM to wait several days before telling them yes or no.  (Company A knows he was waiting for another offer -- sometimes that can back fire -- think of it like a prom date -- Jim asked you to the prom, but you're hoping Bob will ask, so you string Jim along a few more days... eventually choosing Jim, but Jim knows your heart may not be in it, or else you would have said yes sooner).

So happy for you that Company A extended the time -- they must have really wanted him, and are relieved he said yes -- it was a gamble for their own timetable to let him have those days, I'm sure.

This is what I sort of thought myself. I think my main issue is that they waited until the very end of the day. Full circle I suppose though. LOL

  • Congrats!!  That's great news!!  I hate it that job B was so douchetastic, but I'm glad he was able to accept job A!

I'm sure it's a relief to have two incomes now!

Yeah, my peeve with Job B is that he clearly said please let me know by 1 pm and they didn't even call him by 2 - they waited until 5 - I would be on my managers to help me get back to the person by 1 or very close to it if it were me. But I knew job B was out of the game last week.

Kathy, as always you have a very valid point.  In this specific situation, from what Job B said when they called to reject him, it sounds like they were trying to decide between an internal candidate and an external candidate (DH).  So maybe they were waiting for the internal candidate to make a decision, and it took until late afternoon on Monday.  That's very possible.

We knew asking Job A for more time could backfire, but he had a third offer that he could have accepted if the whole Job A/Job B drama blew up on him, so he was willing to take that chance.  I know this about my husband--he's a gambler at heart. :)

I'm mostly just glad that he got a job that seems like a good fit, and we'll be able to more easily meet our goals with two incomes.  yay!
