*Higgy*/Dogs with hip problems
My husband and i have been noticing our dog seems to be having some stiff hip issues in the morning.
This past weekend we went up north and she did A LOT of running. the next morning she had a real rough time getting down the stairs and jumping up into the car. She's not that old (around 6 years).
I plan on asking the vet about it when we go for her yearly check up, but i was wondering if anyone knows of something safe i can give her in the meantime. it makes me so sad to think she is in any pain.

They make doggy aspirin that you can buy at the pet store. Otherwise if you can find bufferin, that works too. It must be enteric coated aspirin.
My doberman has hind end issues and he has a prescription for meloxicam. It is the people version of rimadyl, but much less expensive. If your dog is big like mine, you may want to ask your vet about that as well.

no I have arthritis like an 80 year old women, it sucks, but I dont take my meds all the time like I should, I like to be a rebel
Jess- when is your yearly appt? You can definitely give plain old buffered aspirin, but if your doctor does prescribe Meloxicam (or whatever NSAID), your dog needs to be off of aspirin for at least one week before starting the NSAID.
We also have a laser therapy machine that we use to treat hip issues frequently. Basically it's a series of six treatments over a period of 2-3 weeks. We have had clients reporting that their 12 year old labs are running around acting like puppies again.
Also, are you sure it's a hip issue? It's very common for large breed dogs to tear their ACL in their knee. Every time we hear of a dog limping on a rear leg, I'd say 90% of the time it's the ACL. I'd definitely ask your vet!
I think she is due next month for her appointment.
I definitely think it's her hips but i could be wrong. it isn't all the time. it's mostly after a lot of exercise and laying down for a long time and it's both sides.

This!! One of my mom's dog was having a similar problem. She thought it was the hip and it was the ACL.
If it is the hips, you can give Glucosamine daily for strength. We do this for my mom's two large breed dogs, one of which has hip dysplasia. Devil's Claw is also recommended if you wanted a natural/holistic suppliment for joint releif. It is known to be used in lieu if NSAID drugs.

our dog has hip issues and when he's over active they act up so he gets a pain pill as needed, previcox for now.
We've been dealing iwth his hips for awhile. He's seen an orthopecic and did a few months of water therapy/therapy for them. The therapy really helped him. He also gets fish oil and Glucosamine.
I also know a vet that started using this. He's said that many clients like it very much. We might try it on our dog if we notice he's starting to get "stiffer" in his hips again. I really like this therapy because its non-invasive with no side effects of medicine
