Doomsday Prediction

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_end_times_prediction

I really hope Judgement Day isnt May 21st because I have tickets to a wine festival that day and Ames, MB and I are going to Chocolate World on October 21st.

But in all seriousness, how do you feel about this particular "end of the world" prediction by Christian Radio host Harold Camping?

How do you feel about the 2012 prediction based on Nostradamus' writings?

Re: Doomsday Prediction

  • Personally, I think all of these predictions are crap, and the only issue we're going to have now is dealing with the crazies who actually think something is going to happen in regards to the world ending.  Imagine all the hype and havoc that's going to be caused in 2012 because of the attention the media, Hollywood, and the like are giving the Mayan calendar....c'mon people!  The world is NOT going to end.  Major eyeroll for that one...

  • I find it very interesting! But do I think the world is going to end? No. I'm just waiting for the next ice age. PS, my birthday is May 21......go figure :/
  • This one I have to laugh, its my SIL's birthday the day the world is supposed to come to an end. DH had been telling her that he has had the same countdown clock since 1986. Lol!

  • One word: Hokey.

However, if we have to go out, at least we're doing it in style!

This. Plus since I was very young and going to chruch I was taught the only person who knows when the world will end is God. No one else. So if it happens to be that time, so be it, but no one really knows if or when it will come.

  • Well, wasn't the world supposed to implode or something on NYE 2000?

That didn't happen, so I'm going to assume we have nothing to worry about with these predictions either.

That said, I'm still facinated by the shows on Discovery and History channel about Nostradamus, Mayans and other Doomsday hoopla. I get sucked into those damn shows all the time.

  • I think this guy is whacky. I dont feel like his predictions are based on much.

Nostradamus and the Mayans freak me out a little bit. I mean I'm not off building a Doomsday bunker and hoarding stuff and pro-creating to keep the world going. But theres a little bit in the back of my mind thats like... what if?

Me too!  But yea, I don't believe any of it.

Same here.  I don't really believe any doomsday stuff, but honestly, all the out of the ordinary natural disasters are starting to freak me out a little: how many tornadoes in one day?  Largest earthquake in history?  Makes a girl wonder.... Call it global warming, call it doomsday, but I'm starting to get worried about what's going to happen next.

  • Ya, all I can do is roll my eyes at these and carry on. I was really in to Nostradamus when I was in high school, I have like three of his books, because I found them fascinating but I never actually believed them. I've seen some of the more popular "predictions" of his that are actually sections of different quatrains put together make it seem more like whats happened (i.e. WTC and 9/11) but its not how he actually wrote it.  The Mayan calendar is also a huge debate, as one school of thought says that the timing is completely different and what we're calling 2012 was actually like in the 1800s or something like that.

Don't get me wrong, the end of the world will happen...when the sun dies...but I think we've got something like 5 billion more years until that happens, so you know I've got a few years before I need to start worrying about that...

::sniff sniff:: I don't like the thought of the sun dying. I love the sun.

I think we kind of forget that the earth is, in a sense, just as "alive" as we are. The world is constantly changing and although some of this stuff is definitely out of what we consider normal, it has happened before, we just didn't have 24/hr news streams hyping everything. And for perspective, the largest earthquake was in Chile, in 1960 and 2003 had the most earthquakes in 1 year with 31419 where as 2007 had the most high magnitude (8.0-9.9) with 4. *not to sound all know it all or anything, I just find information like this to help me from freaking out, you know.

  • B heard an NPR interview last week with a couple who are so convinced about this end of days thing that they quit their jobs and are aiming to spend all their money by May 21. They have a toddler and she's pregnant with a second one due....in July.

I *really* hope they revisit them on May 22 for a follow-up interview. God, I want to hear that interview.

    Yes

I hate watching end-of-the-world type movies because they give me nightmares and I do get scared by a lot of all the strange occurrences that seem to happen with more frequency these days (flocks of birds dropping out of the sky, tsunamis, etc) but still, I think a lot of it is just coincidence, compiled by the fact that we have access to just about every piece of information in the world within seconds, as MzZane said.

Now, climate change is no joke, and I do believe it's responsible for more frequency in severe weather (and the death rate of animals who rely on specific climates to survive), but that's not an uncommon belief among scientists/climatologists.  The world has gone through climate change before, so why wouldn't it happen again?  (While I think it's inevitable, I also do believe that we as humans are helping speed up the process, which is unfortunate.)

As far as the creepy Nostradamus predictions, the Mayan Calendar, the Bible code, all that...people can take just about anything and make it fit their beliefs and I think that's what's happening here.  Does the whole 2012 thing make me nervous?  Yes, but it's more the *thought* of the world ending that scares me more than the actual belief that it will.

  • Damn if I ha known the world was going to end I wouldn't have wasted my time ordering and mailing out invites to the Teaghans christening.

  • I don't particualarly thing the world is going to end in 2012 or the Mayan calendar or anything like that. I think it's a lot like psychics or fortune cookies with these old "predictors"; if a fortune cookie tells me that I'm going to have good luck in the future (in bed lol) then that could take place any time anywhere and I jsut have to believe it. Like Michelle said people were freaking out about Y2K as well and that all turned out fine.

As Nooner said it's in the back of my mind but I certainly don't worry about it and live my life based off of it.

  • I don't know when or how it's going to end, but I just hope I'm asleep when it does! Stick out tongue

In all honesty, though, I find the ideas behind the whole doomsday thing fascinating, however, I'm not big into freaking out about it. To me it's like regular death: you never know when it's going to happen, so you might as well live your life to the fullest instead of living in fear. I COULD die tomorrow, but you don't see me spending all my money and doing stupid stuff.
