Allergies?

Since last Wednesday night I've been feeling lousy.  I lost my voice and then started getting congested.  My sinuses have been flaring up, my nose is swollen and my throat is scratchy.  I am constantly coughing because of the itchiness.

I figured it was allergies and have been taking allegra ever since.  I don't usually have allergies (I used to but when I moved 7 years ago they stopped).  Allegra has worked for me in the past but it's going on 5 days now and I haven't really seen any improvement.

My question is, do you think this is allergies or just a nasty cold?  Do you think if it is allergies that allegra doesn't work for me anymore?

My mother feels the same way and she's going to the doctors today so I'm hoping to find some answers.  I do think we both are being affected by the pollen right now.  I guess I'm just wondering if there are other people going through the same thing.

Re: Allergies?

  • I know that the pollen right now is atrocious.  I hope you feel better soon!

  • I wonder the same thing. I came down with the same symptoms on Friday. I feel OK, but the throat and congestion is killing me!

I'm thinking it is allergies, but i haven't ever been affected in the past.

  • I've had allergies ever since moving to DC (never had them for 22 years in NY) and just last week I lost my voice and now have felt lousy since. Congested, throat is scratchy, etc. I think it's allergies myself (tree pollen is at an all time high this year and I'm blaming that!)
  • I really do think it's allergies too and not a cold.  I wouldn't go near my nephew or a few other people if I thought I was really sick.  I'm just wondering why the allegra isn't working.  I used to have allergies when I lived in the Pine Bush but since I moved, I haven't had them.  I guess this year's pollen count is really high!  I hope the med's kick in soon!
  • I take Claratin every day, and I have noticed that the past week has been bad even on constant meds. I hope it clears up soon!

My allergies have been really bad this past week, and I saw on the news that the pollen counts are higher than usual for this time of year. Have you tried rinsing your nose with a saline rinse (netti pot or squirt bottle)? That should help you, whether it's a cold or allergies. Hope you're feeling better soon!
  • I have done a saline rinse in the past.  I'm heading to the doctors today in hopes that it's just allergies and not a sinus infection or something else.
