2 unrelated questions...

1.) For those SAHM what are you doing to contribute to your 401k/retirement? My DH has a few ideas (he works at NYL) but I want to know what real women do. What do you have set up and how was is it to manage?

(Jeff don't post your thoughts-I already know you have a million options, I just want to get some other people's opinions ;-))

2.) Anyone know the approx cost of adding a shower into a 1/2 bath? Our master bath upstairs (above our main level bath) is only a 1/2 bath and if we plan to stay in this house for a few more years, I'd love to add a shower in. I know we should just have someone come look but I don't want to waste anyones time if it's ridiculously expensive. (I'm hoping for a 1k-2k?) Nothing fancy, just a simple stall shower.

Re: 2 unrelated questions...

  • I'm not currently contributing to our Roth IRA.  We don't have a 401k as Jake receives IPERS. I do have a part-time job and after this summer I will begin to contribute to the roth account again. Thankfully, IPERS is freaking awesome so I'm not too worried that nothing is going into our roth right now. The roth has been easy to manage and we decided to go with it so we would have a mix of taxed and no-taxed investments. We also just started deferred comp with Jake's IPERS so that's gong to raise our retirment amount up quite a bit.

  • I can't answer your 1st question,

As for the second, you should seriously call my handy man! Isaac! He/His company is amazing and they're SO reasonable! They fixed 3windows for only $265!! 3windows! AND Jessie- the worker, came to our house on a Saturday and had to deal with our big dog, and was just awesome! We'll always use them now!

    1.  We contribute extra toward DH's 401k through work and I also contribute a small amount each month to a standard investment account that I control myself through Sharebuilder.  Once we have saved at least half of the cost of a new car for me we will be opening a Roth IRA in my name and maxing that out each year.

    2.  We just finished a complete bathroom remodel for my mom for about $3000, although my brothers did all the work themselves and that saved us money. This included tearing out all the old plaster walls, ceiling, and flooring, moving a wall, adding in electrical and plumbing, a new shower, sink, toilet, cupboards, and tiling the floor and shower stall.  Probably the biggest expense if you had a professional do it would be rerouting plumbing if that needs to be done.  To cut costs definitely look at the ReStore for your shower stall itself as they had some awesome deals.  We also got the tile there for a bargain.

  • I don't SAH but I would suggest setting up a Roth IRA.  You can be as involved or as hands-off as you want (when it comes to selecting your stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc).  I would also suggest that you do not go through a financial planner (they will most likely steer you into load funds).  Instead, choose a company like Fidelity or Vanguard.  There is a minimum amount you have to contribute to open but both are relatively low.  Jeff should have one too :)  (in addition to whatever 401k plan he has through NYL).

I've never looked, but I'm guessing upwards of 4-5k for a bare bones shower.  If you have plumbing there already then that's a big bonus.  Running it up to the second floor would not be pretty on your wallet :)

  • Since I am no longer contributing to any 401k, I transferred all my monies to a 10 year Variable Annuity. The potential rate of return is much higher than what I was getting in my High Risk 401k package, and unlike 401k, I do not have the option to go below my initial investment. LOVE it!! I think I am charged a yearly fee, but it is very small compared to what I had been paying Prudential. We are currently in the beginning stages of putting in our addition, so I don't have full figures or 100% experience, but ditto PP about the plumbing. Since you already have the plumbing there it won't be as difficult or as costly as if you didn't. It doesn't cost to have a contractor come out and bid on installation. Make sure to get at least two bids because then you might get a better deal. :)

  • Ditto on the roth!  We actually set ours up through state farm.  When the market and the economy took a tank, my roth really didn't suffer much.  My 401k is another story...
