s/o honeymoon shower

What do you think of diaper parties? I hadn't heard of them until about a year ago and DH has now been inivited to two (one this weekend).

p.s. s/o will always mean "spin off" in my head.

Re: s/o honeymoon shower

  • I could take them or leave them but for some reason dh is totally against them. I was surprised by how much he had to say about them. LOL

I do think people end up with a lot of diapers they may not use though.

  • H is from Ohio, and seriously EVERY SINGLE friend and family member of his has done this, I had never heard of this until his friends started having kids. One idea that I thought was nice was while I drove down to go to the shower, H came with me b/c the guys were having a diaper party, so they provided food and drinks for the guys and they hung out while we were at the shower.

  • If the host makes it an actual party for the guys (i.e. orders a nice pizza, has a good beer assortment, etc.) I am OK with them. But I get real annoyed when I get a baby shower invite and it says "Bring a pack of diapers to be entered in a raffle" and then "And instead of a card, please bring a children's book!"  These sound like cute ideas, but a pack of diapers is $9+, then a book is at least a few dollars.  Please don't tell me how to spend my gift money.  Sorry if anyone did this and you are offended, it just rubs me the wrong way.

I don't like being told what to do either. My mom recently got an invite that had like 5 requests in it. It was ridiculous. I do like the "bring a book instead of a card" poem tho. I have a book I bring to all showers (The Monster at the End of This Book with Grover) & it's about the same price as a card.

OK, I do LOVE that book.  But, I typically don't even buy a card.  I'd rather spend my money on the gift, especially seeing as cards can be like $5 now!

We did the book thing. Embarrassed

I'm ok with it because like you said, cards are just as much as a whole book these days! Also, when going to a shower I just factor that in to the amount I plan on spending.

ETA - I don't even know what a diaper party is??

  • I didnt know what a diaper party was until I lurked on thebump.

I guess I agree if it is an actual party it isnt that bad, I've heard of it being the buy in at a poker party or whatever it is called.

I dont know what s/o means if it doesnt mean spin off.....?

I completely agree and this rubs me the wrong way too.  I'm just always the one that shows up with no diapers, and I don't really care because I think it's tacky.

Molly you are totally in my head today!!! MIL suggested the book thing to me and was upset when I said nope (to the diapers too).

  • I love the book idea instead of a card.  I do the book instead of a card for all the kids parties we go to now.  I think it's a fun way to add to their library!

  • i'm with molly, i like the idea if it's an actual party otherwise it's just more gift grabbing to me. The one's i have heard of weren't just about getting diapers but having a great party and spending quality time with all your friends before you are consumed with a baby for a while.
i also like the idea of the diaper raffle and book in theory, but you are right, it really adds up fast.

What else does it mean? I always thought it meant spin off.

As for diaper parties... I'm not sure how I feel about them. dh and the men in the family/friends groups went out during my shower- they went for lunch and bowling and came back at the end of the shower to join in a few games that we hadn't played with everyone. I'm with the person who said that they'd have a lot of extra diapers they may not use--- If you go, you should bring larger sized diapers maybe?
I would have loved one if we could request cloth diapers- however I'd NEVER do that because they can be $$.

ETA: Dh just said he's all for it "It's just like a bachelor party for a guy who's about to have a baby, you just have to bring a pack of diapers, big deal!"  He also went on to tell me that back in Buffalo, a guy was shot at one. The guy was at a diaper party and was drunk, went to the wrong house and was shot as the owner thought he was an aggressive intruder.

    I don't mind the card thing, I think it's a cute idea.

However, I hate hate hate the diaper thing.  I got a shower invite today to bring a pack of Pampers to be entered into a drawing for a $75 gift certificate.  I spent at least 5 minutes b!tching to DH about how tacky it was.  I don't think he understood.  I refuse to buy someone else diapers (unless they are cloth).

  • I have never heard of a diaper party, although if there is an actual guys party with beer, wings and pizza, then I guess its not that big of a deal.

I am not opposed to diaper or book requests on the invite.  I already plan on spending xx amount and if they want me to spend part of the money on diapers or books, then that's cool with me.  Plus with coupons, you can get diapers relatively cheap.

My mom threw our shower and did the diaper thing, at first, I wasn't sold on the idea, but I am enjoying that LO is almost 4 months and I have yet to buy a pack of diapers, and probably won't for a really long time.
