Did you test your home for radon?

We're in the process of buying our first home in Sacramento (Offer was accepted yesterday, yay!). Our inspection period is going to begin in the next week or so, after they make some repairs to the house.

If anyone else reads Young House Love, their post today reminded me about radon testing! I don't think radon is very common in California, but did you test your house for it?

    I live in Boston and it's pretty common to test basement areas here for it so we did.  Our levels weren't crazy high, but above the recommended norm so we had the seller pay for a mitigation system to be put in.

    My understanding is that the issue with radon is that it comes from the rocks and collects in the lower levels of the house.  A mitigation system is a fan or circulator so it doesn't build up.  Here, since we don't have basements, there isn't really anywhere for it to build up and we have good circulation within the house.

    Looks like there's some information for the state here including a test kit that's only $5

    Ok, now I've done more reading and it looks like I was totally wrong and are still at risk so we really should be testing.  Homebuyer's guide

    Nope - when I got the prelim title report back it said radon levels were low so we skipped that test. Good luck on the escrow process and I hope your house closes on time :)
