Hardwood floors and stairs

We have a ton of space in our new house, about 90% hardwoods..trying to figure out the easiest way to sweep/mop these expansive floors and multiple levels of stairs.

I'm thinking I need a canister vacuum and then maybe a steam mop?

Any other ideas?

Re: Hardwood floors and stairs

  • First thing you need is a Swiffer.  They work so much better than a regular broom on hardwood floors.  Because of the kids and dogs, I am swiffering the main routes twice a day.  I also have a no shoes in the house rule.

I don't steam mop the hardwoods more than once a season. My canister vacuum is not much good on them but my canister vacuum is very old.

  • Try borrowing a friend's steam mop if you don't already own one, and try it out in a few of the closets first before using one on the main floors.  Even if it goes well in one closet, its best to try several in case the finish is aged differently, that could be a help in predicting how it will come out on the main floors. We have had the best luck with microfiber head "swiffers" that we pop into the washing machine at the end of the week, we have to swiffer it daily too from the dog and cat hair.
  • I use a steam mop called The Shark for our wood floors. I love it. We have a dog, and it wipes the footprints away. It just uses water, no chemicals! Also it comes with 2 pads that can be thrown in the washer/dryer, so its "green" -no garbage. Its light also, so you can use it on your stairs. It does have a cord though.
  • We have hardwood all throughout except bathrooms.  The stairs are hardwood also. I vacuum, swiffer then mop w/hot water vinegar solution.  Pretty simple and works great.
  • do you guys do this stuff on real hardwood or is it the laminate??  i have real hardwood and have been using bona and thought it was doing a good job, or it was but recently it has started looking dull and coming out all streaky.  its so frustrating cause i really spend alot of time on it.  i would love to use our shark but afraid of the finish.

any help would be greatly appreciated  Smile

use a broom then vacuum.  NO STEAM ON WOOD FLOORS!  It will void most new flooring warranties and can damage the wood over time.

    Damp mop with water only.
