Moms - daycare question

Monday DH and I are going to look at my top 3 daycares - 2 centers, 1 in-home.  I talked to them all today and they take infants as young as 6 weeks and will have an opening for us in November.  Obviously I want to see them before we make a decision.  I have my heart set on the in-home (mainly due to the conveniece of it being 2 streets over from our house) and she gave me a ton of information over the phone (the ages/genders of the other kids, the kinds of activities they do, food/drinks provided, transportation, things I need to supply, her 17 year history - only closed twice due to a funeral and having her appendix out, the days she takes off, rules on sick kids, etc).  The centers just said they will have an opening, what the weekly infant rate is, and set up a time for us to go in.  I am just hoping the in-home will be nice when we look at it.

Anyway, does anyone have a list or suggestions of questions to ask the daycares?

  • Hey Shelley. I have a list. How about if I email it to you? Do you still use the juno.com email address?

  • That would be great.  Thanks.  And yes, still use the juno account.

I don't have children, but I worked in a preschool for 6 years while in college. You definitely want to ask them the ratio of babies to workers.

  • Thanks for the email Dani and Dana.  I really appreciate it.

And Dani, I was told by the daycares I called today that the only time it's too early to start making arrangements is before you're pregnant.  I was just afraid most places would have a 6+ month waiting list and I wanted to get on that list for a November start.

  • Once you visit with one, you'll know what you want to ask of the others -- I thought it was a lot easier as I went along. In general, I wanted to know their take on certain things like discipline, parent visits in the middle of the day, accommodating BFing and CDing, and those questions helped me get the gist of their "parenting" philosophy. Then I wanted to know about their credentials -- what licenses and skills do they require head teachers / assistance teachers to have, how much experience do the teachers / asst. teachers have in the infant rooms, what kinds of activities do they do with the children when they get a little older, when do they start baby signing, etc.

I felt like I knew right away what daycares I liked and which ones I didn't. I had strong feelings at just about every one I went to.  I paid attention to how the teachers treated the children, how they handled things while I observed in the classroom (if a kid acted out or how they corralled them for food or stories, how they were giving bottles). I was important that his teachers were nurturing, so I loved seeing them kiss the kids. When I brought J to the center I chose, I also talked to the teachers about some of my concerns and the way that they addressed them made me feel a lot better -- they really are experts. You want to be comfortable there and feel like you trust them.

    HTH!
