I'm so jealous of your garden - we have no fence and a pack of deer that bed down in our yard so they would just use it as a salad bar. I hope you get lots of goodies from it this season!

I'm sorry - I had to laugh at your butterfly cupcake post! I hate when they make a recipe sound easy and then you attempt it and it's nothing like what they have. On the other hand - those lemon poppyseed muffins look YUM!
I'm trying to decide if I want to put up a fence... We've not seen many deer in the area, mostly because our subdivision is under some pretty heavy construction with all of the houses that are being built. If I need to, I'll throw up a quick chicken wire fence just around the garden. Hopefully that will keep them out! I hope we get some good food too!!!!!!

My MIL has been doing them for the last few years and it's such an awesome idea! You don't have to use the crappy soil we have around here (ours is almost pure sand) and everything grows in a small space. I planted 10 tomato plants, 8 strawberry plants, 16 lettuce plants, a ton of onions, 3 green pepper plants, 3 red pepper plants, 2 jalapeno plants, 4 basil plants, 4 cilantro plants and 36 green bean plants in just two 4ft by 4ft squares. It seems crazy, but it really is a great way to grow veggies!

This is very interesting to me! Since I assume you don't dig down into the ground before laying the black material and adding new soil -- is 3" of dirt deep enough for some of the larger plants to take root? Or do they tend to poke down through the landscaping fabric? Just curious.

No, you need about 6" for most plants. We used a 6"x5/4"x16' board of cedar to make one box. We just cut the board into four equal pieces and constructed the box that way. We filled the boxes all of the way to the top.
If you want to do something like potatoes or carrots you can "stack" two boxes on top of each other to get 12". Those types of root plants really need 10-12". You can even make a partial box to stack on the corner of your 4'x4' (or whatever size you use) box and fill that to make the soil 12" deep.

Wow - this is such a cool idea! I also love the square foot gardens idea - I've been wanting to try my hand at gardening and I feel like this is something I could actually manage haha. Thanks for sharing!

How in the hell did you plant all of that in two 4x4 spaces!! My one garden is a little bit bigger than both of yours combined and I can't get that much in. Maybe I am planting them too far apart!?!? I go by the recommended space they give you on the little tags.
Is this your first garden? I had really good results with green peppers, jalapeno and cucumbers last year! I just planted lettuce, broccoli and spinach a few weeks ago and am excited to plant my 'summer' veggies soon!!
My onions and garlic that I planted in the fall are up and I am just waiting for the stems to die, so that I can dig them up!! Gardening is so much fun!
Yes! They tell you how far to space the plants. Like lettuce needs 4-5" in between each plant, so you can easily plant 4 plants in a square foot. Bush Green Beans need 4" so you can plan 9 in a square foot. Peppers need 10-12" so you can only plant one in each square foot. But by putting everything in a 4 foot by 4 foot square you get 16 one foot squares. It saves a TON of room from a traditional row garden, because you need to put more space between the rows so that you can walk and weed and that sort of stuff...
This is my first garden, so I hope it turns out!
I'll definitely keep updating about it on my blog! We'll just see how it goes!

OK, that makes sense; I have to keep room for me to walk and weed! We are actually going to lengthen my garden by one railroad stake because I want to plant corn
(I also have to have it fenced in because of the stupid deer).
I always thought that those little tags were over zealous in their recommendations on how far apart to plant! I am uber jealous of how much you were able to plant!
