Bragplaint?

So I'll be getting a raise starting in July. I'm a bit in awe of how big of a raise I'll be getting because really my job isn't that hard to do.  I sit at a small little cubicle and for 4 hours call through a phone list and read a script trying to get people to donate their blood.

Now I fully expected when I started this job it would be about minimum wage and it is. I work 16-20 hours a week and make $8/hr. (I don't mind sharing this either b/c the next part seems crazy to me.) So in July I get a $2 raise so I'll be making $10 an hour. That is a huge leap and really my job doesn't deserve it in my opinion but I'm not going ask them to pay me less, right? So here's the really crazy part My shift is 4pm-8pm. Now you would think that I would make $10/hr the whole time but no ladies and ladies, because to of those hours are after 6pm there are going to up my pay yet another $2 and if I work Sat or Sun I'll be paid $12/hr for my time on those days.

So breaking it down it looks like this

Currently

T,W,Th,F,St 4-8pm @ $8 per hour

July 2011

T,W,Th,F, 4-6pm @ $10 per hour

T,W,Th,F,St 6-8pm @ $12 per hour

I'm not trying to brag or complain but I'm utterly confused and lost at why I'm going to be getting 2 pay rates in the same shift. Does this make sense to anyone else?

Oh and BTW if anyone can work the same shift I am, they are hire more staff for my position.

Re: Bragplaint?

  • If I remember correctly, at my previous employer, the people that worked 2nd shift were paid a premium since 2nd shift was at night.  So, they were paid extra for working odd hours.  They don't get to see their families during the day because they should be sleeping so I understand why they would be paid more.  Maybe that is what is going on at your job?

Maybe we'll talk over the phone sometime?  I get called a lot asking to donate blood :-).

  • That's awesome news! Congrats on the raise. I'd go with what Tigers says as the reasoning for the additional amount. Most positions end at 6 and so those extra two hours when you could be home with family would get paid more. Not all companies do this (my past customer service position didn't) so it shows that you're somewhere where they value that you're giving up that time for their cause/your job, which is nice. Keep up the good work!
  • That's awesome Deeder!

  • I'm guessing they budgeted to pay their people $10 an hour but start them at $8 until they have have been there for a few months. Why pay $10 until you have weeded everyone out.  That is great that they pay extra for later shifts.
  • That is great, congrats on the raise!
