Because Flecky asked for details....last night

We had an interesting night.  Let me preface this by saying we are constantly having problems with our smoke/CO detectors and DH *JUST* replaced all monitors and batteries.  At 1:50 AM one of our detectors (right outside of JJ's room) started screeching "CARBON MONOXIDE! CARBON MONOXIDE!"  Ugh.  So we both get up kinda freaked out.  My obvious first thought is JJ, but I heard him stirring, so I figured he's ok.  I'm ready to call 911 b/c I know that there's no way of smelling CO and we could drop dead while freaking out.  DH wants nothing to do with 911.  Nice, I tell him, we'll have our own little Romeo & Juliet scene, killing ourselves and our child too.

DH reset the alarm and fell back asleep!  I was so mad!  Of course I couldn't sleep, so I'm researching CO poisoning and totally overreacting that I may be getting nauseous, feeling a headache come on, wondering who will find us dead, my poor sister & father that have already been through so much, my younger sister and if she'll feel like crap if she hears we're dead, how will the Nesties find out (yes, I was thinking about the Nesties)....there was a myriad of thoughts going through my head.

Then the alarm goes off again.  DH resets it, goes back to sleep.  And finally a 3rd time.  He's still fighting me about calling 911 b/c he's afraid we'll wake up the entire neighborhood.  Because I care if we wake up the neighborhood.  By this time, DH agrees to let me call.  We had to evacuate the house, and the fire department came to do a CO reading.  I had to wake up JJ and sit in the car with him & DH will they tested the house.  Poor JJ had no idea what was going on.  Bottom line, it was faulty detector, and instead of just screeching "low battery" it had to tell us that we were being poisoned to death.  Thanks, really.

As we're getting back to bed at 3am, JJ gives me this big cheesy grin and says "MAMA!"  Oh JJ, go back to sleep; I love you, but not now.

I'm exhausted today, but at least we're alive :)

Holy crap! Thank goodness that it was just a faulty detector, but I would have slugged my DH if he ignored a detector that was going off, especially one where you can't personally tell if it is really sensing something like CO!

Glad it wasn't worse. Hope you're able to get a peaceful sleep tonight.

  • HAHA, sorry, but it's kind of a funny story - not while it's happening, but definitely after the fact in the retelling.
  • I have a somewhat similar story from last Wednesday night....I always set the house alarm before going to bed...my husband comes ome from work around 2am, it beeps when he opens the door until he puts the code in (which is normal). Then he goes to set it again but it continues to beep, weird, oh well, he gets it to stop and re-set, all is fine....He sets his phone (which is on vibrate) on the kitchen table and goes into the other room to undress. All of a sudden my cell phone rings, I look and its a 401 number but I don't recognize it so I press ignore, right as I press ignore my husband comes running in the room to answer it, its the alarm company, they had just called his phone but it was on vibrate in the other room.....Crap....they send the cops...Cops came had to come in the house, looks around, ask me if I am ok (domestic violence), ask to see our ids, and then leaves. Come to find out, the battery in the alarms keypad was dying and somehow triggered the silent alarm (who knew it had a silent alarm). I never would have thought that it was the alarm company calling my phone because the alarm never went off....Then as I am about to fall back asleep my phone rngs again....its my mother in law (we set it up for the alarm company to call them last if at first my husband nor I pick up) she is all nervous cause she thought my husband was still in Florida. She said all she kept thinking was that someone had a knife to my throat, haha. Poor lady.... So I was finally able to fall back asleep around 4am....

  • It's definitely funny after the fact.  Especially when you're remembering the crazy stuff that went through your head.  Like wondering how long it would take for someone to realize your dead?  I knew DH had a meeting with his brothers this morning so I figured it wouldn't be long.  Plus I left a CO website up on my cell phone so it would be easy to figure out the cause of death.  I know, I'm a loser

I was so out of it when I called dispatch that I couldn't remember our phone number.  I pulled one phone number out of my a$$, then had to ask DH and still gave the wrong number!  Thank God it's over!

Kris, that is a funny story, but scary at the same time.  We received too many of those random phone calls in the middle of the night from our store alarm company or from my ILs house.  Your poor MIL must have been terrified too!

  • UGH!! Sorry that happened!!!! Stephen would be the exact same way though, resetting it and just going back to sleep, and I would be flipping out. I had to laugh reading your story because I could see myself sitting at the computer doing the same thing you were doing. ;)

Ours have done the same thing several times. Sadly, ours doesn't say what is wrong, it just beeps. And twice it happened when I was home alone so I called 911 both times just to be told, nah you aren't dying, your alarms just suck. We want to replace them all with the ones that tell us WTF the problem is. Luckily they haven't done it since Benjamin has arrived. He's got one in his room (our house is 1700 sq. ft and we have EIGHT detectors. It's a bit overkill) so I'm sure he would freak the F out if it went off.

Our carbon monoxide detector went off in our other house several years back, and I called 911.  The file department was very nice about it (I think ours was a defective one as well, or it expired or something - I had a very old plug-in one, and they were not approved anymore).  Better safe than sorry, I say!  I'm glad everything checked out okay.
  • oh angela! i would have done the same thing. i call the cops/ fire department for everything... any unusual noise a footprint in the snow etc... you are so funny though! i totally would have acted the same exact way.
