Skincare

I've been breaking out like nothing else lately (worst acne I've had in my life) and my face is so greasy. I think it's time to switch to a different face wash or just switch up my entire regimen.

Any recommendations on what I should try?

What do you do on a daily basis to keep your skin clear?

Re: Skincare

  • I don't "wash" my face with any type of cleanser.  I have extremely dry skin, so most things irritate it.  I wet it with warm water (in the shower) and pat it dry.  Then I use Neutrogena Combination Skin Moisturizer daily all over it.  Sometimes in the winter when it's really dry, I'll use cold cream on my forehead and cheekbones.  But nothing more than that.  And nothing scented.

  • You know, I would really like to try the Clarisonic or Nutrasonic. I'd be curious to hear if anyone is using one. It's like giving yourself a facial every day. I mean, those electronic toothbrushes are recommended by dentists, so I'm assuming the same principals apply to your face?

Right now my routine is just to splash my face with warm water in the morning and put on moisturizer and primer, then in the evening to wash it with a face cleanser. If I do face cleanser more than once per day, my face will get very irritated.

I would recommend moisturizer and a primer - yes, even if you have oily skin. My skin tends towards the oily side of the spectrum, but ever since I've started using a primer, I have hardly noticed a problem. It sort of "protects" your skin from makeup or dirt from getting into your pores and making your skin react with producing oil. I also find that moisturizer has helped make my skin have natural, healthy glow. Moisturizer is certainly NOT only for those with dry skin. And there are moisturizers specifically targeted for girls who run oily - as well as primers. The one I love the most is this Dr. Brandt Pores No More primer that also acts as a pore reducer and redness correcter. It's wonderful. Yes, spendy, but oh so worth it!

ETA: Also try blotting paper. Just get a travel pack and keep it in your purse. You can use this over makeup to take the oil away without taking away the makeup.

It can be, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be out for this month, TTC-wise.

  • I'll definitely check out some primers when I go to the store this weekend. I think I'm going to go to Ulta and see what I can find there. If I don't find anything there, I'll definitely look into that Pores No More primer.

  • I started using Proactiv a couple years ago and that has worked well for me.  I get it at the mall kiosk so I don't have t deal wit the mail order and automatic shipments.  Usually just use the cleanser and 2nd step, and rarely the lotion.

  • I usually get oily by the end of the day, but I agree with Archel that when I use a primer, it's noticeably less.

In the morning I usually just wash my face with warm water. At night/when I get home from work, etc. I use Philosophy's Purity Made Simple: http://www.philosophy.com/skincare-cleansers/purity-made-simple-product

For moisturizer, I use Cetaphil with SPF 15, but I think the summer I want to try to find something that has a higher SPF (closer to 30).

I've heard good things about the Smashbox Photofinish Primer (I haven't tried it yet, but I do have a small travel size tube that I bought at Sephora). I also have this one that I like:

And finally, I really do think that the ridiculous amounts of water I drink a day really does help!

  • I'm keeping you in my thoughts, scarlettdahlia! I had a major break out last month and ended up being 5 days late in my period. We thought I was pregnant - I wasn't - but it's a sign that things are changing in my body so mayyyyybe the same for you??!!! :) I hope so!!

As a result of my prepubescent-esque breakout, I have resorted to adding...wait for it...STRIDEX PADS back into my evening routine. In the morning I wash my face with plain Dove soap and then use Neutrogena oil-free Moisturizer for Combination Skin - I swear by this now that I've been using it! No more oil!! I also use Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Eliminating Spot Gel for spot treatment on pimples before applying my makeup. In the evening I was with Neutrogena natural fresh cleansing + makeup remover - it gets rid of waterproof eye makeup as well as cleanses so I'm happy with it. I follow up with Equate Anti-Wrinkle & Firming Moisturizer.

    Hope this helps!

  • I usually avoid acne by being on birth control, and tanning... so you might not want to take my advice ;)

In all seriousness, I got some awesome Clinique make-up remover.  Doing that every night before bed has made a big difference.

  • Ugh I feel your pain. :) I actually have hormonal acne. I am just one hormonal mess in every area of life it seems lol. I use JuiceBeauty's acne line. The cleanser is nice and gentle (I have to wash my face twice a day). The blemish clearing serum keeps my acne at bay and the moisturizer is very non-greasy and soothing. I use their sensitive skin apple facial peel too once a week to exfoliate. I also give myself a mud mask once a week. So far, my skin has improved (I've just accepted that my skin is high maintenance). I have to second Raangoli's advice that drinking a ton of water helps too. Also, Smashbox's primer is amazing. I don't normally wear it but I wore it for my wedding day.

I have found that the worst thing for my skin are:

*Failure to exfoliate weekly or wash away makeup nightly.

*Over-washing or washing with soaps that are too drying. That inspires my pores to "overcorrect" and produce more oil. And it makes my skin red and irritated.

  • I was also suffering the worst acne of my life recently! I had to give up everything that 'worked' for me because of getting pregnant. My sister who use to have bad skin recommended the Derma Doctor line and it is my savior!!! I use the wrinkle revenge cleanser right now because it is safe during pregnancy but they also have acne line that I think is worth looking into and I might use that once the baby is born, although the wrinkle revenge one does more for keeping my skin clear then any other acne product I tried before.

  • What a coincidence!  I too am suffering from the worst (and pretty much only) breakouts of my life.  I know mine are due to stress, so of course addressing that is the main thing.  Water really helps clear your skin, and so does eating right.

My skin is very very oily, although in the past not acne prone.  I use Burt's Bees cleanser (the mild one) twice a day, and at night follow with Lancome eye makeup remover, Burt's Bees toner and Bliss moisturizer.  In the morning, I use an SPF moisturizer (15 or 30, depending on the season).  I exfoliate maybe once or twice a week and do the occasional pore strip.  I also have found that a primer really helps control oil, and those blotting papers are awesome.

I also tried Murad acne treatment when there's a breakout and I find it effective.  You can use it as a mask or just spot treatments.  I should add that I also don't have sensitive skin at all, so products never seem to aggravate or dry out my skin.

  • Thanks for all the tips! I'm definitely going to research them all and buy some new products this weekend!

  • Man, I totally missed this post.  I went off BCP to do FAM, and dear lord my skin is awful now.  Thankfully, my face is okay... but everywhere else is breaking out.  My back is the worst, and it totally grosses me out.  I've been using a spinning scrubby brush (think oversized clarisonic) with acne cleanser, but now I'm thinking maybe I'm drying it out and it's overreacting, because it's gotten worse in the 3 weeks I've been doing it.  DH commented on it last night (when I asked him to put meds on it, not just outta the blue) and suggested it might be because I went off my BCP.  Sigh, what to do, what to do.  The official reason I went on them in the first place was my skin - but I thought 10 years was long enough for my skin to grow up.  Obviously not!

I think any change like that is bound to make you break out, even if only for the short term. I used the clarisonic before and it worked great at first and then I think just over-did it because I broke out worse then before after a couple of weeks. When my back was bad I used a Neutrogena Clear Skin body wash and it worked great. If you use moisturizer make sure it is as light as possible, and I even stopped using moisturizer at night and found this helped me a lot! I just use my eye cream at night now. GL!

Angie - Give it some time. It may clear up. Now, here's the bad news: hormonal acne is not necessarily something we grow out of (if it is indeed hormonal). Sigh lol. I suffer from it myself. During my training last week, I asked one of the ob/gyn's about this, and he said frankly, hormonal acne is one of the few things that at this point, the BCP treats best (most other conditions that the BCP helps with can be treated without the BCP). He explained to me that those of us with hormonal acne are low on a certain chemical in our blood that "eats up" the excess hormones, thus preventing them from wreaking havoc on our skin. He said he is personally experimenting with alternative treatments like certain herbs to offer hormonal acne sufferers some relief. If I learn more, I'll share :) but for now, if the acne doesn't clear up, go to your dermatologist and ask for non-BCP options (they can treat without BCP even if it takes a little more effort!). I have tried several prescription topicals and my skin is much more manageable than it used to be.

Also be careful of foods like soy that imitate hormones... they can add to the  breakouts. :( Just my two cents lol.
