Anyone with ripe tomatoes yet?
My cherry tomato plant has a ton on green ones and I have one huge green one on the heirloom plant.... And they've just been green for weeks! Are yours ripening yet? I'm debating putting them in a sunny window because the birds are hunting in the garden already.
Re: Anyone with ripe tomatoes yet?
Same here, green for almost a month, but nothing red yet! I'll have to look on my blog and see when I started picking them last year, I planted around the same time. I'm wondering if the lack of rain (and not enough watering on my part) has anything to do with it.
ETA: May 24 was my first tomato last year, a cherry. My romas and heirlooms took another 3-4 weeks http://farmerash.blogspot.com/2010/05/week-17-first-tomato-and-first-death.html
I've got maybe 3 cherry tomatoes that are starting to turn red, but aren't ready for picking yet. I don't even have any green ones on my regular tomato plants yet though.
and my stupid zucchini plants are all only producing male flowers. come on...

We had an issue with the squirrels or birds eating our strawberries as well! DH made cages to go around each plant out of chicken wire (I think) and that seems to have helped a ton. We now have another "pest" eating stuff in our garden. Seems our dog Cabela thinks that the cucumber leaves are tasty. Dh created a modified fence to go around the garden area thinking it was dog proof. Yep, within minutes of him finishing Cabela figured out how to get in and out of the garden through the door DH created and was positive she would never figure it out.
DH bought supplies to do this a few weeks ago, but he was short a piece of wood & it has been sitting in the garage ever since. I've made it his #1 to-do item for this weekend. The damn things won't even touch them when they're green, but right as they're ripening to a pretty red the peck away.
cseale - can you please set up a video recording of you taking on the birds? should be great viewing material
pumpkin and belle don't go in the garden, but charlotte LOVES chasing lizards, so if she sees one on the fence behind the plots she'll weasel her way in and trounce the plants. but then she can't figure out how to get out and cries. it's awesome. /sarcasm.
we have either canteloupe or watermelon plants that grew on their own, but also aren't producing any fruit yet, it's annoying! the butternut and spaghetti squash are running rampant though!
