PSA: Do not name your child...

I'm doing some 2nd grade testing this week. I always look at the kids' full names. (I can't help myself. I have a problem.) This kid's middle name is Licquor. I said "How do you say your full name?" hoping it was at least pronounced differently. Nope. It was all I could do to not make this face. Tongue Tied Please, don't name your child after an alcoholic beverage or any type of recreational drug. His teachers will judge him and, worse, you.

PS: I have another kid named Jagger, and in my head I always call him Jager, as in meister. He was probably named after Mick Jagger, but that's not a lot better.

Re: PSA: Do not name your child...

  • We almost names Loki "Stoli"  -- a dog is one thing, though...

  • I heard another gem of a name last week. It's pronounced "shi-thede" but is spelled "sh!thead". Way to go Wisconsin, way to go.
  • I can't forget the girl named Marijuana Pepsi. She was/is from southern WI and was named after her mother's two favorite things. Horrible.
  • Yeah.  I had an intake interview with a kid named Blade once.  Seriously?

Jagger is kind of a popular name now.  I wouldn't even look twice at that.

Probably because anything goes for naming your kids now (I'm looking at you Alicia Silverstone.  A bear is a species, not a child's name).

Ninth Anniversary 2500 Comments 25 Love Its Name Dropper

I met a woman once named Lasagna.

And my nephew's middle name is Behr, which is what he goes by. BIL wanted it to be his first name. Two years later I still give them the side eye for that naming choice.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • I've always heard that Marijuana Pepsi is an urban legend. Who knows though? I have a cousin who named his daughter Mary Jane. They're big time pot heads. Her mother did drugs while she was PG and now the little girl has developmental delays. Way to go. Real proud. ::shakes head::
  • I judge people who name their kid Jameson. I almost like it but I can't get over the alcohol references.

My friend from HS, no longer friends, named her son that and then a playmate of my babysitting kids is named that but she's a girl.

    So, it's a unisex drinky name! :D

  • Oh, and a tip for moms-to-be:

My mom said you shouldn't have the last letter of the child's name be the same letter as the first letter of the middle name. Says it interrupt with the verbal flow of it.

She also says that she practiced my name, when she was PG, and picked it out so it would sound good on stage at graduations.

However, the first and middle are obviously more important than the last name since women often conform to the sexist tradition of taking their husband's name. I guess it would be important than for boys.

They're calling my nephew Tre'.  We've already talked about this, but I still judge.

Yeah, we have a boy at school named Jameson. I always think Jenna...

I've learned from stalking the baby name board that this is actually a fairly common Indian (I believe?) name.  Awkward over here in the US, but yeah...

I agree with this - well, not really first and middle name, because it's uncommon for someone to be refered to as their first and middle name together. My first name and my maiden name together really messes up the verbal flow because my maiden name also begins with an L. When I'd say my first and last name together, people would think I had some weird first name and wait for my last name. So, when I hit college, I started going by Jill Marie Lastname to make it easier.

  • Working at a Juvenile Court I could share with you some name doozies, examples: Lil'Quincy, Ma'youngin', Khameryn(Cameron), Johnasa, Quanek, Kajuanis...I could go on and on. Maybe I'll turn it into a weekly thread: things you just shouldn't name your kids.

Off of the O/P though, we have a family in our building that has 6 kids that are all named after alcoholic beverages...Chardonnay, Merlot, Hypnotiq, etc...I can't remember the other three as these kids aren't in my courtroom. I feel bad for them, as I do all the kids I see on a daily basis.

I want more proof.  I have always thought this was a major urban legend.  You hear so many people saying they know someone named that and I just can't believe it.

This makes me think of that old Saturday Night Live episode where the guy's name was A$$wipe and he had to finally convince everyone it was pronounced "Aw-ZWEE-pay."

  • At the hospital I work at there are a bunch of terrible baby names.  2 that I can remember now are "Bailey Morgan" (that's a girls first and middle names - yep, 2 liquors) and a girl named Sailor.
