living near Arlington, VA
please help if you can... we are likely moving to the Arlington area. I'm hoping to live south of the city a little further away from dc. what would be nearby cities that have:
affordable 2-3 bdrm apts (under 1500)
less than 20 minute commute to the arlington school district
is there a good website that would help me with relocation to this area???

Re: living near Arlington, VA
I would look at private owner rentals as well. I rented a townhouse in Falls Church that was 3 bedrooms for $1500. I found it on Craigslist. I've seen condos as well your price range being rented out. Depending on where you work in Arlington, Falls Church will be a 10-30 minute commute.
I don't know their prices anymore, but when I first moved to DC 12 years ago, I rented at Foxchase in Alexandria. They had affordable 2 bedroom apartments that were 2 stories. That section of Alexandria tends to be less expensive and again, depending on where in Arlington you are, it would be a 10-30 minute commute.

You'd likely need to be 10 miles or less from your school to consistently do it in 20 minutes. That pretty much leaves you with Alexandria or Falls Church.
The ladies on this board are really good at giving location advice-- just be really specific about what you can afford, where you'll be working, what kind of house/apt you are hoping for, etc. $1500 probably isn't going to get you a decent apartment in a decent area. Just be prepared to pay a larger chunk of your salary for housing than in other cities. That's just the way it is :-( Don't get disheartened... it takes a bit of a mindset adjustment when moving here.
To get an idea of what housing may cost, check out a housing website like homesdatabase and put in your specs (it has rentals, too.) You can opt to have the list update as you move around on the map, so you'll start to see when your price range buys you more (as you move further away from the District.)

thank you, ladies. i appreciate the info!!
my dh would be working in the arlington school district (and our 5 y.o. will likely be attending school there). i'm not sure what specific bldgs he will be at but i think his job will require travel to multiple schools within the district. i dont have a job there yet, so we're just concerned for him and his commute. with a family, we'd prefer as much space as possible but i know that 1500 wont get us much. the plan is to rent cheaply for about 2-3 yrs while we save for a nice home.
