Really stupid backyard advice needed

I can't believe we've lived in our house 1 year and have yet to take care of this..

We asked the owners to remove the sandbox in the backyard when we bought the house. They removed the box and left the sand. We've removed a bit of it last summer just by throwing it away, but what do I do with a large amount of sand? It's heavy and ugly and my dog uses it as a litter box.

They also left an attractive pit of white rocks that I guess they had a trailer or something parked in. It is about 10x15 feet. We've taken out a good amount of those last year too. I'm thinking of Craig's listing them for free but H is the paranoid type and doesn't want people in our yard digging up rocks.

WWYD?

  • I wouldn't want random people knowing where I live personally - so I would forgo the CL ad.

I have no advice on the sand or rocks though - maybe someone one of you work with would want the rocks?

  • In Berkley, if you put it (the sand and rocks) in the yard waste bags or a trash can marked compost they will take it away. I think we are still in the free time but after a certain date you have to get tags at the library.

BTW - I saw your post the other day that you may have the saddest yard in Berkley, I think we could give you a run for your money. :)

Hmm.. I did not know they would take rocks & sand. We've put leaves and sticks in the street and they've taken them, I just didn't realize. Thanks!!

And I'm sure we've got you beat. It's embarrassing.

  • We had the same problem.  We bagged it and put it to the curb with the trash.  It took weeks and weeks to get rid of it, but it was the only solution we could come up with.

I'm pretty sure they will take it if it's in a bag/can. We dug up a corner area for a flower bed last year so we had dirt to get rid of. They took it. Just make sure it doesn't weigh a ton, if it weighs over a certain amount they won't pick it up. I suggest using one of your garbage cans so the bottom doesn't break out of the bottom of the bag. Speaking from experience. Big Smile Maybe put out as much as you can each week. It might take a while to get rid of it all!

  • I also live in Berkley and have a yard that looks terrible.  Maybe we could have a tour of crappy yards, similar to the fancy home/garden tours that various cities will have. Stick out tongue

LOL! We have like zero yard and yet it still manages to look like a foreclosure, that's what I tell DH. Everyone around us has this nice green plush grass and ours looks like crap! We finally bit the bullet and are paying a fertilizer service. We'll see if it makes a difference.

Our front landscaping has been on my to-do list for like 3 years. It's so hodge podge w/ like one of everything. Some half dead. I'm hoping to make DH rip it all out and plant a bunch of boxwoods and call it good.

H has been toying with the idea of paying a fertilizer company, who did you go with?

And I'm thinking boxwoods too :) Except we have NOTHING to rip out. That's how craptastic our yard looks. Just dead grass.
