News from South Texas

http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/05/09/mexico.violence/index.html

This took place about an hour from my house.   I need to move.  I hate, hate, hate South Texas.  Not only because it's disgusting and run down but because of the violence and the bad guys who come over here from Mexico (but not all illegals are bad).

I swear to God I could be living in Mexico.  I think one day I will drive down my street and take pics of some of the houses and post them on here.  I can't even begin to describe the conditions that people live in.  And the mentality of people here is just......different.  Nothing I am accustomed too.  Not that different mentalities are bad, it's just nothing I want to bring my daughter up in.

Oh, and here's my favorite quote from the article:

"Mexican authorities, he (Zapata County, Texas, Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez) told CNN last month, have "somewhat of a zero solvency rate, and a zero conviction rate."

Awesome.

Re: News from South Texas

  • Move to Chicago with meeeee.
  • Sadly, I think that as long as demand for illegal drugs persists in the U.S., trafficking across the Mexican border will also exist.  I'm sorry that you feel stuck there right now, Kathy.

DH and I were talking yesterday about how bad it would be if we were assigned to a Mexican border post.  It's not even about the potential for violence, it's the schools that we wouldn't want to deal with.  Apparently State expects parents stationed in border towns to send their kids across the border to the U.S. public school.  The quality of the schools in many of those towns is so poor that our kids would literally be better off if we were in many of the third world posts in places like West Africa.

Oh no, eff that!  I lived in Illinois for 1 year in college and I could hang.  The cold weather was too much!!

How about we switch places.  Like, your H can be a Border Patrol Agent and my H could be a Marine Biologist?  My dream is to move to Tampa and your dream can be, well, to move to Texas?

    How about that?!?

Selfishly I hope you are stationed on the US/Mexico border.  Then we could have a GTG......on the American side of course!  Just kidding, like you said the Mexico border is no place to bring up kids.

Luckily we are about an hour away from the border, so we are *slightly* better off than the border towns.  My H claims that if we were stationed directly on the border he would have quit years ago.  I actually think border towns are nicer than the town we live in, by a long shot, but the violence/corruption is about 10x's worse.  I thank the lord every day that we do not live in Laredo, TX.

I'm going to add GTGs with you as potential positives should we ever be stationed at a border post!  DH and I have said that we will go whereever the service sends us so I always try to focus on the positive of anywhere we might end up.

I'm sure it is hard being in a place that you don't love and far from family, but it's nice that your H's job has provided the opportunity for you to stay at home with Macy and travel a lot to see friends and family.

Plus, selfishly I think you'll be able to relate to my struggles after we move better than anyone b/c you practically live in a foreign country yourself!  Wink
