  • I charted after coming off the pill.  Pick up a copy of Taking Charge of your Fertility; I found it very helpful.

  • I charted to get pregnant and it is amazing what you learn about your body while charting.  I did not read the book that Mrsredmoose read, but many people have and say it helps tremendously.

You also need a basal body thermometer (not a regular thermometer) and  I used fertilityfriend.com to track my temps.  You take your temp every morning at the same time and chart it.  The different chart patterns which you can learn about in that book or on fertility friend will let you know when to avoid sex.

I was having serious issues on the mini pill, came off of it, and amazed at how much better I feel while not on it.  You are probably doing the right thing in listening to your body!! GL with it!

I chart as well - learned from the book mentioned above - I really like being in-tune with my body. I bought my thermometer off of Amazon - it's at BD brand and I use fertilityfriend as well.

It requires daily temping, and, if you're using it to avoid pregnancy, you'll also have to check your cervical mucus daily (yes, it's gross -- you'll get used to it).

The temp only tells you AFTER you've ovulated because it goes up after ov.  You can't rely on the temp change to avoid pregnancy, because you won't know for sure when it is coming and sperm can live for up to five days inside you, so you can get pregnant from having sex days before you ovulate.

You actually have to pay attention to your cervical mucus to to know when you are fertile. and avoid intercourse for the 5-ish most fertile days.

Taking Charge of Your Fertility is the go-to book on this stuff.  Personally, even though I've been charting for awhile ttc, if I were trying to avoid pregnancy, I wouldn't rely just on natural planning.  When I went off the pill and before we were ready to ttc, we just used condoms for a few months.  Kinda sucks, but it works.

ELF is right - if you're trying to pinpoint when you might be fertile you need to check CM (it doesn't seem strange after a few times) since temp only tells you when you've already ovulated.  If you're TTA, you can use solely charting, you just have to be thorough and apply the "when in doubt, abstain" rule. I've been using it for a while now without any problems.

  • Go get that Taking Charge book. While you're out you should also pick up some condoms or a What to Expect While You're Expecting. One false move and well... LMAO.
  • We started using it to avoid.  I wound up pregnant.  I wasn't good at taking temps at same time each day because it was summer and I slept in a lot.

  • You may also want to look into a fertility monitor.  I was not really good at taking my temps at the same time every day (always forgetful).  I also didn't like not knowing when I was going to ovulate until after I had.  I found the Lady-Comp fertility monitor and I'm loving it!  You have a window of time to take your temp (just take it before getting out of bed or doing anything else), and it learns your cycle and predicts your fertile window so you easily know when you have the potential of conceiving (sex up to 5 days before ovulation can still lead to pregnancy because the sperm can survive that long!).  If you want more information, their site is www.lady-comp.com.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
