I saw this story on the news this morning about a fight in the middle of a local classroom. In the video a student (one of many) took with their phone you can clearly see the teacher, a rather large-looking male, simply standing there watching the fight. Personally, I am appalled that the teacher did next to nothing to stop the fight. I realize that in this day and age the teacher could actually end up getting sued by one of the kids if he intervened, and I understand that but he should've at least done something. At the very least we should've heard him telling someone to go for help and yelling at the students to stop....something! It's not like the two were rolling around on the floor with fist and body parts flying everywhere - one of the kids didn't even fight back!

Yeah, I saw this on the news yesterday. Also, it turns out there is another video of fighting from about 3 weeks ago in the same room with the same teacher. The teacher keeps saying the policy is for him not to get involved (not true).
My opinon - his license should be revoked and he should be fired. I don't want to hear how youth are horrible these days and I'm just protecting myself - it's BS. I teach in an inner city school where kids raise themselves. I'm not just a teacher but a parent to a lot of them. I have some kids that are very volatile. Heck, I've had stitches in my leg because a kid bit me.
All of that to say - 1. that would never happen in my classroom. You have to be better at classroom management than that. I realize it's high school but that's why it's even more important to create a community of respect. 2. At the very minimum, he should have gone next door to get another teacher to call for help or use the phone in his own dang room to call for help - it's why they're there. 3. How on God's green earth did no other teacher around his classroom hear that mess?
It makes me angry that crap happens. I think they should beat the teacher.....not really but you get my point.

I have a bit of a different opinion on this. I don't believe the teacher should have physically put himself between the two students. My sister did this a few years ago at her HS and ended up getting hit--and she isn't the only teacher that this has happened to.
I do think that the teacher should have at least gone to get help. In my old HS there are phones in every classroom in case there is an emergency situation.
That's exactly it, Alyssa! I also don't think he should have intervened physically but he should have done SOMETHING - ANYTHING! To me, his classroom management is non-existent. The kids know they can fight in his class so, they do. Not acceptable.
They give us phones for a reason.
