I had to go to my doctor today because I started spotting/cramping yesterday at work. Everything is okay, thank goodness...they said it looks like a couple cysts ruptured and caused that to happen. I'm measuring perfectly and all is well.
While I was there, I asked my doctor if the one-a-day women's health vitamin I have been taking is okay as a prenatal. She said yes, as it has the recommended 400mcg of folic acid plus everything else. She mentioned, though, that she would prefer me to take more folic acid...like 4000 mcg total. So she wants me to keep taking my daily vitamin, but had me go out and buy a folic acid supplement and take NINE of those on top of the other vitamin AND Expecta...an omega three fatty acid supplement. She wants me to take all of those until I am 8 weeks (so, three more weeks) and then I can drop back to just the vitamin and the Expecta.
Has anyone heard of this or are you doing it, too? I thought it was a ridiculous amount of folic acid...I even told her that I wasn't sure if she was joking or not. She wasn't. I don't know how well swallowing eleven pills is gonna do if/when morning sickness sets in....
Re: Mommas/mommies-to-be
not 100% certain on all types but if you just take a pre-natal, it SHOULD had all the folic acid you need in a day. what she has you doing seems excessive when one vitamin can usually do the trick. 4000 seems like a lot
eta: i take nature made and they have 800 mg. i have never heard of taking 4000 but i'm not a dr so i don't know. if you trust her decision then do what she advises you to do.

how much is in your prenatal? even if there is 800 in it, that would still only be 1200 which is a lot less than 4000. if there is only 400 in it, then you are taking 800 right?
i'm so confused by prenatals. why on earth would they even make them without the recommended amount you need?

Hmmm I take the same amount of folic acid but my situation is really different being on the blood thinner. That is a lot but I don't think it could cause any harm.
If you have a vitamin shoppe they have really easy to swallow ones that are 800 mcg, folgard is great too but I have to order that one.

am i absurd for wondering why people don't just take a pre-natal that has everything in it so they don't have to take a supplement?
of course if there are other medical reasons or they make you sick i understand but if not, explain to me.

I will admit that I still take the gummies minus iron.
I attempt the iron supplements a few times a month but I usually still can't keep it down. So far my Dr. hasn't said I need to worry. The folic acid in the gummy isn't enough so I have extra supplements to take to make up the difference.
ETA: umm yeah I obviously just skimmed yours, sorrry I didn't want to just delete my response though. LOL
