Placenta Previa

My sister had her 20 week u/s on Friday and her OB told her she had a low-lying placenta. Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: Placenta Previa

  • I had this for awhile when I was pregnant with Ava early on.. In my case, it moved on its own and was no big deal. In some cases, if it doesn't resolve itself, I think a c-section may be necessary because you can't deliver normally with the placenta in the way..they may have her come in for a follow up ultrasound

  • Is it just low lying or is it actually covering all or part of the cervical opening?  20 weeks is pretty early, so hopefully it moves away from the cervical opening.

  • Right now, from what I gathered, it is a low lying.

They caught mine at 12wks when I had an emergency ultrasound and I was told that they usually correct themselves and it's actually rare to detect it that early, so if hers was detected at 20wks, I wouldn't worry yet.

And like LittleBug said, it could result in an automatic c-section, but otherwise I don't think it's likely to cause other problems.
