Teachers- Where do you get supplies?

Next year I am doing interactive notebooks and I want to set up a supplies cart/zone. I will need some supplies to start out the year and I'm trying to find the cheapest place to get them. I will need dry erase markers, colored pencils, glue, scissors and envelopes. Oh, and also construction/colored paper. Any suggestions for cheap places online for quality supplies? Thanks.

Re: Teachers- Where do you get supplies?

  • Ask parents to send them in. Have it be part of your beiginning of the year supply list.
  • It will be tough enough with my kids to get them to get a notebook, so asking for things like scissors and glue is asking a lot. Most of my kids are free and reduced lunch kids. I will get a little money from our pta, but not a lot and not until October or so.

Go to Walmart right before school starts.  Supplies are dirt cheap then. I got markers for a quarter, glue for a quarter, etc etc.  If you're going to buy them yourself, it's the only way to go.

  • I buy it at Walmart during the back-to-school "sale." I'm fairly picky and prefer name-brand markers, etc. I already have scissors. I teach 5th grade and have adult scissors I got from a teacher who decided to stay home.

I would ask parents to send in things like envelopes. Generally, even in low income areas, if you send them a list and ask them to send in one or two items, the parents will do it.

Colored pencils, glue, scissors, and dry erase markers are all things that we can put on their required supply list (though my team does not include scissors because we all have scissors).

I have 80% free/reduced lunch kids. I have done science journals (notebooks) for several year. Really, ask for what you can on the school supply list then buy anything else at Wal-mart in July/August.

  • I go to Staples.  Sign up for their rewards program and you can get a ton of coupons.  Also, be sure to get your school's tax ID number so you don't have to pay sales tax.

  • Would your school give you the tax ID number so you would not have to pay tax?  I don't think our school district would EVER do that for us!!!

(We have been fighting to sign up again this year for the Terracycle program because our district will not let is have that nymber..and we could be earning money for our school for recycling certain products!!)

  • I space my school supply shopping between the Office Max, Office Depot, and Staples penny sales that occur right before school starts. They usually have gule, colored pencils and more. I next year, I plan on getting my dry erase markers from Costco because they are reasonable and I know I am going to need them all.

    Good Luck!

  • Target and walmart for crayons, scissors, glue, and notebooks.  Construction paper I get online at teacherdiscounts.com i think that is the name.  I also do grants on donorschoose.org This year alone I have received $2000 worth of needed materials.

  • stores like staples, walmart and target have great sales right before school starts.  i always buy my ninth- and tenth-grade students notebooks at target, which used to be something like 4/$.50.  i usually buy two cases every year.  i spend a small fortune on school supplies before school and during the year, but the kids appreciate it, so i don't really mind.  :)
