"Family" Vacation question

Would you go on a vacation with your family?  Family = extended (mom, dad, aunts, uncles and their kids).  Like rent a beach house and stay with them for a week or so?

My mom brought this idea up for next summer and while I think it could be fun, I think it might be too stressful at the same time.

Re: "Family" Vacation question

  • Our family talked about doing the same thing last summer, but we ended up not.  However, we do go camping together a lot.  Usually its my family, my aunts family, all the cousins there, and a few other people.  We always seem to have a really good time.  But we have been doing it for a while so we respect boundaries and understand sometimes people want to do there own thing.  Though at the end of the day we all have our own campers to retreat to, we aren't sharing a house, that may make things a bit stressful.

  • i think no matter how much you love each other it is going to be stressful. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be worth it though. I think it depends on each family.

I could do it with my family (as much as i would want to kill them) because i know we could all have our own time to do what we want and could get away if i needed to and would still have a ton of fun. My friend goes with her ILs and they expect everyone to do everything together at all times and that would be too much for me.

  • A week?  Hell no.  A weekend?  We do it, it's stressful even for 3 days.  I can't do more than 3 days.

  • No way. Sadly I already know it would end bad. I would maybe go with one of my sisters but I don't really love her boyfriend so even that is probably a no.

  • Considering my mom's family is about 55 people in total, it would be a nightmare.  I could go with some of my cousins and certain aunts and uncles, not everyone.  It would be a hot mess.

Dad's family, forget it...my dad would kill them all before the cars took off.

DH's family...not a snowman's chance in hell we would ever even consider it.

  • I think it would be fun!  But then again, the majority of my extended family lives in PA and FL so I don't get to see them that often so I'd love a vacation with them.  Only thing about that is, one date never seems to work for everybody.

  • We went to Disney for a week over Thanksgiving. We DROVE=, 4 days total in the motorhomes & 5 days at Disney. It was me, bf, 3 of my sisters, 3 brother in laws, 3 nephews, 2 nieces, dad, step mom, and one of BIL's family (dad, mom, sister & her son). We planned a lot ahead and decided there were going to be things we'd do as a group and times when we could do whatever we wanted. We camped in campers/cabins and once we went back to the campground we were on our own to do whatever we wanted. It was awesome! We didn't have any arguments or major stress while we were down there. I think planning ahead really helped because everyone was on the same page and we didn't waste any time down there trying to decide what to do and when. I would totally do it again if we had the chance. We all knew how stressful it could be and I think everyone was open to letting things happen- it was easy to adjust so everyone got to do what they wanted.
  • Yes. We went on a cruise with MIL/FIL, 2 uncles and 1 aunt. It was a great time.

We're going to Italy with my entire extended family (parents/uncles/aunts/cousins) in August 2013. Yes, we're freaks and planning REALLY early.

Yes but my family is really close, and everyone gets along really well. Both my mom and dad's sides. We have family reunions every year on my dad's side where we go stay at my grandma's cottage up north together, and it's always a great time. She has a pretty huge house though so it doesn't seem too too crowded, although some of us do camp on the beach.

I don't know if DH would say the same thing though! He likes quieter vacations with alone time for us.

No, absolutely not.  If and thats a big IF we were going to go to the same location as family I would not rent a beach house with them.  I would insist on having my own house/cabin/hotel room something so I could get away from them when they undoubtable started getting on my nerves.

  • Last summer we rented a house on a lake in Michigan on the west side of the state. It was me, H, my sis, her H, my niece (8 months old), their dog, my brother, my other brother, his girlfriend, my mom and my gma. Oh and our dogs.

We rented for a week and we were lucky to find a place that had 2 smaller houses on the property, on a private lake so we could have some space. It was nice, not all of us stayed for the whole week and we ended up having a good time. Of course my gma made us a little crazy...but she's my gma she always makes us crazy. LOL.

Overall we had a good time...it was nice to have separate spaces we could retreat to. My siblings and I are pretty close so it was nice just hang out together. I would do it again.

  • Yes.  We have done and still do this.  The biggest one was back in 2002...about 15 of my mom's side of the family (myself and parents included) went on a week-long Alaskan cruise.  I'd never been on a cruise before and couldn't help but wonder what on earth I'd do trapped on a boat with my family for a week.  It was seriously one of the best vacations of my life, and I am so thankful all of us were able to go.  Since then some family members have fallen in bad health and my one uncle has passed.  It's great to be able to look back at those pictures and remember the great times we had.  Yes there were stressful moments, but I don't even remember them now.
